SILENT Brass: a Yamaha benchmark designed for modern practice
With SILENT Brass, Yamaha has developed an essential solution for brass players: the ability to work on technique and musicality without location constraints, while avoiding the "stuffy" timbre typical of traditional mutes. This new generation combines a redesigned Pickup Mute (more compact, lighter, freer projection) with a Personal Studio module featuring Brass Resonance Modeling, to recreate a near "bell-open" playing sensation through headphones.
For whom and in what playing contexts
The Yamaha SB1J is aimed at tuba players of all levels, from conservatory musicians to brass band or orchestra players who want to practice regularly without disturbing others. It is especially suited for long practice sessions (scales, flexibility, articulation, endurance), as well as current contexts: online lessons, home recording, or discreet warm-ups backstage. The headphone sound encourages a more relaxed playing style, which helps maintain healthy sound production despite using a mute.
Sound and design
The core of the system is the Pickup Mute, which combines effective attenuation with an internal microphone capturing sound as close to the source as possible. Yamaha emphasizes intonation and homogeneity across registers, providing a more natural playing feel than purely acoustic solutions. On the SB1J model, an adjustable rod allows you to fine-tune the mute head position inside the bell to refine pitch and resistance feel according to your instrument and blowing style. For convenience, the mute is designed for smooth positioning and removal, and the entire system is detachable to reduce bulk during transport.

Questions frequently asked
Does the Yamaha SB1J allow tubists to practice without disturbing others?
The Pickup Mute reduces the sound level by -25 dB to -35 dB and features an internal condenser microphone. The sound is heard through headphones via the Personal Studio STJ.
Does the headphone sound remain natural with this tuba mute?
The Brass Resonance Modeling Ver.2.0 reduces the muffled sound effect caused by the mute. The Player mode recreates a perception intended for the musician, while the Audience mode offers a listening experience from the audience's perspective. Reverb can be adjusted from the STJ.
How is the tuning of the SB1J mute adjusted?
An adjustable rod modifies the position of the mute head inside the bell. This adjustment affects pitch and resistance felt depending on the tuba used.
What accessories come with the Silent Brass tuba?
The set includes stereo headphones, a connecting cable, a micro USB type-B to USB type-A cable, and a manual. Two AA batteries are still required to power the Personal Studio STJ.
Is it possible to record or attend online lessons with the STJ module?
The micro USB type-B port allows connection to a computer for recording or online lessons. An adapter is needed to connect the module to a smartphone. AUX IN input and PHONES output complete the connectivity.
