The YDS-122, a Modern Approach to the Saxophone from Yamaha
The Yamaha YDS-122 is part of the Japanese brand's range of digital saxophones, renowned as much for its acoustic instruments as for its electronic solutions designed for musicians. Designed as an enhanced version of the YDS-120, it notably offers new sounds, a more up-to-date USB-C connection, optimized sensors for improved durability, and an innovative analog controller.
Its goal is simple: to preserve the essential sensations of playing the saxophone while eliminating volume and space constraints. Musicians can still enjoy blowing, articulating, and playing with their fingers, at home or on the go, without having to deal with the sound level of an acoustic saxophone.
A Digital Saxophone for Learning, Practicing, and Expressing Yourself Freely
The YDS-122 is aimed at beginners who want to discover the saxophone in comfortable conditions, as well as intermediate and advanced saxophonists looking for a silent practice instrument. The key layout, based on that of Yamaha acoustic saxophones, makes the transition easier for players already familiar with traditional fingerings.
Its wide range of voices makes it possible to explore classical music, pop, jazz, contemporary music, or improvisation. The saxophone sounds cover the soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone registers, while the other built-in instruments open the door to more original colors: flute, shakuhachi, trumpet, violin, and electronic sounds, among others.
Breath, Dynamics, and Playing Feel at the Heart of Performance
The Yamaha YDS-122 relies on a breath sensor, a system that analyzes the air pressure sent into the mouthpiece. The more controlled the breath, the more the musician can influence the intensity and timbre of the note. This approach encourages expressive playing, with full low notes, more delicate highs, and dynamics suited to each musical phrase.
The specially designed mouthpiece allows the player to produce sound without having to manage the vibration of a traditional reed. It therefore provides a highly accessible solution for working on finger placement and breath control. As it is removable, it also simplifies routine instrument maintenance. The new analog controller complements the playing experience by providing an additional expressive control within easy reach.
Sound reproduction is handled by a digital generator and a bell-type acoustic mechanism. The bell is the flared section located at the end of a saxophone: on the YDS-122, this principle helps provide a more natural sense of sound dispersion while playing.
