A Classic ART Revisited: The Tube MP Spirit with Integrated USB Output

The Tube MP Project USB follows the line of ART's compact tube preamps, designed to provide a musically flattering harmonic color without complicating the setup. The goal is simple: maintain immediate access and efficiency of a mono preamp in a compact format while adding a USB digital output interface to facilitate computer recording.

In a range often appreciated for its performance-to-size ratio, this "Project USB" version positions itself as a hybrid solution: a true analog path with tube and level controls, plus a USB output to quickly integrate into a home studio environment, complementing or serving as an alternative to a traditional audio interface depending on the use case.

Who and What For: Adding Character to Takes with a Ready-to-Record Input

This tube preamp is aimed at home studio users, musicians, and content creators who want to enhance the quality of a take (and its character) without investing in a heavy studio chain. It is also well suited for those who occasionally record vocals, electric guitar via direct output, keyboards, or any line source requiring a gain stage more musical than a simple generic input.

Thanks to its high gain (over 70 dB), the Tube MP Project USB can be a valuable aid when using microphones that require a lot of gain, while remaining relevant for already strong sources thanks to the independent output level control. Its compact and stackable format facilitates integration on a desk, in a studio corner, or in a nearby rack.

Features and Control: Level, Protection, and True Input Flexibility

12AX7A Tube Preamplification Designed for Musicality

At the heart of the Tube MP Project USB is a 12AX7A tube that provides smooth and progressive saturation depending on how you drive the input gain and output level. This architecture allows you to choose your approach: stay clean and dynamic, or push the tube to thicken a vocal, densify a bass, soften harshness in the upper mids, or add a bit of "glue" to a source.

Having two separate controls (input gain and output level) is a real advantage: you can optimize the level sent to the recorder, console, or computer while controlling the harmonic behavior of the tube stage.

40 Hz Bessel High-Pass Filter, Switchable Impedance, and Phase Inverter

In recording, low-end cleanliness and load compatibility with the source often make the difference. The switchable impedance helps adapt the preamp to different microphones or instruments, while the 40 Hz high-pass filter (calibrated Bessel type) reduces vibrations, handling noise, very low plosives, or unnecessary sub-bass build-up that eats headroom before saturation.

The phase inverter is valuable in multi-mic situations or when combining a mic take with a direct input: a simple flip can restore phase coherence and immediately bring body back to the signal.

Built-in FET Limiter: Securing Peaks Without Disrupting the Flow

The integrated FET limiter manages transients and avoids surprises: vocal attacks, pick slaps, dynamic peaks on guitar or keyboard. It acts as a safeguard to protect the following stage and help maintain a usable take, especially when recording at home without a dedicated sound engineer and sometimes variable conditions.

Phantom Power and Direct Box Mode: One Unit, Multiple Scenarios

The switchable phantom power makes the Tube MP Project USB compatible with microphones that require it. The direct box function also simplifies life for guitarists and bassists: you can feed the instrument input, benefit from the gain stage and tube color, then output cleanly to a recording or sound reinforcement chain.

Finally, the presence of control LEDs makes level adjustment and signal monitoring easier: an essential point to quickly find the right balance between dynamics, warmth, and headroom before saturation.
