Japan Tune-up: Bacchus "Handmade" DNA Transposed into a Ready-to-Play Series
The Japan Tune-up series aligns with Bacchus' philosophy: offering reliable, consistent, and enjoyable instruments for everyday use. The idea is simple yet highly effective: the bass is manufactured in Indonesia, then set up and fine-tuned in Japan by a dedicated division in Matsumoto, to deliver a ready-to-play instrument without surprises. On this JT WL4-BP/M, Bacchus also reintroduces a strong aesthetic marker: the KRB (Keiryu Blue) tint, previously seen on limited editions from higher-end ranges. The clear, subtle, and even "burst" finish requires true mastery: here, the goal is to achieve a premium character bass without losing the "musician's tool" spirit.
A 4-String Bass Designed for Demanding Bassists, from Studio to Stage
With its TYPE S format and intuitive electronics, this Bacchus is especially aimed at intermediate to advanced bassists seeking a versatile instrument capable of covering fundamentals without struggling with the craftsmanship. The "JT" setup also makes it very welcoming for a motivated beginner: comfortable action, consistent response, and a feeling of control from the first notes. Style-wise, it covers a very broad range: funk (attack and articulation), rock and pop (foundation and definition), jazz and fusion (nuances, dynamics, fingerstyle work). The 2 volume configuration encourages "by-ear" adjustments: you precisely dial in the amount of neck pickup for thickness, and bridge pickup for precision and grain.
Sound: Clarity, Attack, and JB Palette, with a "Turbo" for Extra Impact
The Original JB Set pickup duo targets the "JB" sonic signature: a neck pickup generally rounder and fuller in the low-mids, and a bridge pickup more focused, with more bite and definition. The 2 Vol / 1 Tone scheme allows you to shift from a full, enveloping sound to a sharper texture, ideal for bringing out ghost notes, pick lines, or highly articulated passages. The tone control is your finishing tool: open to keep air and attack, closed to round off and thicken.
The pull-up "turbo switch" delivers an immediate behavior change: you typically gain in presence and punch, useful for a softer verse then a chorus that needs to lift, or to thicken a line in a trio context. Add to this a maple neck and a maple fingerboard: maple is valued for its responsiveness and clarity, with a crisp attack and a precise feel under the fingers. The JB Bridge with brass saddles aligns with this: firm response, solid foundation, and well-sustained sustain, particularly helpful when playing fingerstyle with marked dynamics.
Recommended Compatible Accessories
This bass comes with a gig bag and a truss rod wrench, and is strung with D'Addario XL-165. To maintain the same feel and tension, a replacement set of D'Addario XL-165 (4 strings) is the safest choice. You can also add a strap (standard compatibility) and a bass stand for storage at home or rehearsal.
