Historical Context and Positioning in the Range

With the St. James series, Blackstar aimed to solve a well-known paradox: achieving a true "organic" tube sound at 50 watts without hauling a ton. The St. James 50 EL34 stands as the most "classic" and British-voiced version in the range, designed to cover the major standards of rock and blues while integrating modern direct recording features. Its chassis and speaker cabinet optimized for lightness (Candlenut plywood) make it an ideal head for guitarists alternating between studio, rehearsals, and gigs.

Who This Amp Is For

The Blackstar St. James 50 EL34 targets intermediate to advanced guitarists who want the feel and dynamics of a tube amp with true versatility. In rehearsal and on stage, its 50 watts provide a comfortable volume reserve, while the 2W and Sag modes allow working on touch and compression at home or in a home studio without sacrificing character. Style-wise, it excels in blues, classic rock, pop, indie, and more aggressive rock when pushing the saturated channel, and it handles pedals (overdrive, fuzz, delay, modulation) very well to further expand the palette.

Features and Innovations

This head offers a simple and effective architecture: 2 footswitchable channels, a bass / mid / treble EQ, and an integrated reverb to add depth without overloading the pedalboard. Its major strength remains its "studio-ready" orientation: the built-in reactive loadbox allows using the power stage without necessarily connecting a speaker cabinet, while sending a usable direct signal. The CabRig DSP section provides a speaker and mic simulation more realistic than a simple D.I. output, delivering a coherent sound for recording and PA. Add to this a series effects loop with level selector (handy for adapting multi-effects, racks, or pedals), and you get an amp designed equally for live and studio use.

The Sound

With its EL34 tubes in the power section, the St. James 50 EL34 aims for a warm grain rich in harmonics, with a clear attack and a typically "British" midrange presence. The clean channel offers a full and defined clean, perfect as a pedal platform, with enough headroom to maintain precision in chords and funk, then a natural transition to slight crunch when played harder. The second channel delivers a tight and singing crunch, ideal for classic rock riffs and leads, and the Boost mode helps thicken sustain and make the guitar stand out in the mix. The Sag mode adds a more "spongy" and compressed feel, very pleasant for recapturing the bounce of a pushed amp. Regarding "reference" uses, this model is still little documented in publicly listed artist associations, but its sonic signature clearly aligns with great rock and blues tones: an inspiring clean and an expressive saturation that responds to guitar volume and touch.
