A "lost" Big Muff resurrected... then adapted for bassists

The Bass Big Muff Pi 2 merges two ideas that immediately resonate with bass players: the legendary Big Muff DNA (long sustain, fuzz wall, strong personality) and a Dual Op-Amp circuit conceived in the late 1970s, which remained in the shadows before being revived in collaboration with Josh Scott (JHS Pedals). The result: a Muff with a sharper and more dynamic character, whose bass version retains the core sound while adding what's necessary to maintain the low-end foundation in a mix.

For which bassist, styles, and contexts?

This fuzz is suitable both for bassists discovering distortion and for experienced musicians seeking a big texture that's immediately usable. In alternative rock, grunge, stoner, doom, metal, indie, post-rock, or noise, it excels at thickening a riff, transforming a simple line into a lead, or "fattening" a chorus.
In the studio, the BLEND facilitates tracking by keeping the lows clean while adding a dense fuzz layer. Live, the momentary action allows you to send a burst of fuzz over a measure, a break, or the end of a phrase without managing an additional on/off. On a pedalboard, it sits well before an octaver, filter, or bass preamp, depending on the desired aesthetic.

Controls, modes, and ergonomics: simple but incredibly effective

The Bass Big Muff Pi 2 stays true to the Big Muff ergonomics with VOL, TONE, and SUSTAIN: you instantly find your bearings to adjust output level, brightness, and fuzz/sustain amount. The major difference comes from two bass-oriented additions.
The BLEND potentiometer adjusts the ratio between clean and fuzz signals: fully left is 100% dry, fully right is 100% wet, and at noon you get a balanced mix. The BASS BOOST switch adds more low-end to the fuzz sound, particularly useful when pushing the TONE towards brighter and more present upper midrange settings.
For bypass, Electro-Harmonix opts for a true mechanical relay bypass controlled by a soft footswitch, with on/off (latching) or momentary operation for ultra-musical interventions.

The sound

Expect a thick fuzz with near-infinite sustain and a midrange grind that helps the bass remain clear in a band. The BLEND is key: it allows you to keep attack and fundamentals while layering rich harmonic distortion, avoiding the "disappearing in the mix" effect that some fuzzes can cause on bass.
With BASS BOOST engaged, the impact becomes more massive and the "walls shaking" sensation is immediate, while still allowing you to brighten the sound via the TONE. If you like modern rock-style saturated bass sounds, the Big Muff family is a classic among bassists like Chris Wolstenholme (Muse), known for incorporating Big Muffs in his tone chains.
