An Iconic Clarinet, Heir to the "RC" Vision

In Buffet Crampon's history, Robert Carrée's work marked a major turning point: his pursuit of a better compromise between acoustics and mechanics helped evolve the modern clarinet. The "RC" family is part of this approach, with a sound identity that has become a reference for many clarinetists.

The RC model also benefited from an update in 2014, resulting from years of acoustic research, to meet current expectations regarding tuning, homogeneity, and projection. The result: a clarinet designed for today's artist, demanding in control, precision, and consistency.

Who Is This RC For?

This Bb clarinet is primarily aimed at advanced and professional musicians, as well as players progressing toward high-end instruments who want a durable, expressive model that is rigorous in terms of intonation. It is perfectly suited for the classical repertoire (orchestra, chamber music, competitions), while also being very comfortable in wind ensembles, brass bands, and more contemporary projects where projection and stability are key.

Thanks to its 440/442 Hz pitch and the inclusion of two barrels, the RC adapts to different contexts (studio work, ensemble, stage) and facilitates fine tuning adjustments according to playing habits and environment.

Sound and Design

The RC is sought after for its warm, centered, and homogeneous timbre, with beautiful continuity across registers (chalumeau, clarion, altissimo). Its projection supports solo playing without hardening the tone, while maintaining great clarity within a section.

Its poly-cylindrical bore (i.e., the internal geometry of the body, crucial for tuning and response) promotes smooth response and overall controlled intonation. The leather pads contribute to stability and airtightness, while the presence of cork on the chalumeau key helps reduce certain mechanical noises during playing.

Regarding construction, the body in grenadilla (Dalbergia Melanoxylon) provides density and resonance, and the silver-plated keywork combines elegance and durability. The adjustable thumb rest improves ergonomics, a real plus for long sessions (orchestra, rehearsals, teaching).

Recommended Compatible Accessories

To accompany a Bb clarinet daily, you can consider Bb clarinet reeds (strength adapted to your mouthpiece and level), cork grease to preserve the joints, and a Bb clarinet swab to reduce moisture inside the body after playing. A clarinet stand can also be useful during rehearsals and on stage.
