A Rock Classic Revisited: The Echoplex EP-3 Spirit in Pedal Format

The Echoplex EP-3 (transistor version) left a huge mark on guitar history: Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, Brian May, Andy Summers, and David Gilmour all helped popularize this type of tape echo, capable of thickening a clean tone as well as enhancing distortion. The problem: the bulky format, the cost of vintage units, and sometimes unreliable maintenance make them complicated to use daily.
The MXR EP103 Echoplex Delay belongs to the "modern era": a compact pedal designed to recapture this legendary character while avoiding maintenance and transport hassles. The result aims to capture what makes tape echo charming: repeats that blend into the playing, with warmth and a very musical density.

For Which Guitarists and Styles?

The EP103 is aimed at guitarists who want a characterful delay, expressive and immediately inspiring, rather than an ultra-clinical echo. It shines in rock, classic rock, blues, pop, shoegaze, and also in ambient contexts when pushing repeats to create breathing layers.
In the studio, it helps place the guitar "in the mix" without harshness, thanks to darker and thicker repeats. Live, it covers essentials: slapback for punchy riffs, longer delays for solos, and spacious repeats reminiscent of great '70s sounds. It suits both minimalist pedalboards and more elaborate chains, especially if you like stacking overdrive and delay to achieve a wider, singing saturation.

Settings, Controls, and Options: Simple Delay, Highly Sculptable

The MXR EP103 keeps it simple with immediate usability: Delay sets the delay time, Sustain controls the number of repeats (feedback), and Volume adjusts the level of repeats relative to the dry signal. This covers key settings, from subtle thickening to more dominant trails.
Its distinctive feature is the Age control (aging). In the "new tape" position, the echo stays cleaner, better defined, with subtle wow and flutter. Increasing Age gradually introduces a more "lived-in" texture: more pronounced degradation, the feeling of tape that has run for hours, with that slight unpredictability that makes the echo alive... but without the downsides of a real tape mechanism.
The pedal includes an on/off switch and tap tempo control via a compatible external switch (such as the M199 Tap Tempo Switch). With this option, you control tempo with your foot and can extend delay times up to 4 seconds between repeats. This extension opens broader possibilities than the standard range, especially for slow atmospheres, widely spaced delay patterns, or precise rhythmic placements in a band.

Sound Character

The EP103's character is clearly "Echoplex"-oriented: warm, thick, slightly darker repeats that sit behind the playing without masking it. Where a very bright delay can sometimes clutter the highs and tire the ear, here the echo naturally blends into the sound, adding depth rather than a simple doubling.
The dynamics remain pleasant: the echo responds well to attack, and the pedal lends itself to an expressive approach (pick attack, guitar volume variations, right-hand nuances). In slapback mode, it immediately adds that "old school" relief; on longer times, repeats build a spacious atmosphere, ideal for evoking Pink Floyd-like textures. Thanks to the Age control, you can choose between a more defined delay or a more degraded echo with greater personality.
