Afterneath: From Cult Pedal Reverb to Modular Format
The Afterneath has established itself as a unique reverb: less "room" and more "texture machine," built around a network of very short delays that create irregular reflections, sometimes almost metallic, sometimes fluid and misty. In this Eurorack module version, the spirit remains the same, but with an approach designed for patching: fine level control, CV integration, and especially a Reflect path that invites rerouting the feedback to achieve drones, unstable shimmering, and moving spaces.
Who Is It For? Ideal for Ambient, Experimental, Techno, and Sound Design
This module is aimed at musicians and sound designers who want an expressive reverb capable of becoming a true instrument within a modular system. It excels with rich sources (oscillators, chords, voices, field recordings), but can also transform a dry percussion signal into a "spectral" sound thanks to the dry/wet blend and diffusion.
In the studio, the Afterneath Eurorack is perfect for creating atmospheric backgrounds, transitions, reverberation tails that "sing," and textures that reconfigure with each modulation. Live, it adds a signature character to an effects bus, with the possibility to lock a simple patch... or venture into more chaotic trajectories via the Reflect loop.
Controls, Modes, and Patching: A Reverb That Modulates Like an Oscillator
The panel offers a main audio input, a main audio output, and a dedicated Reflect Send/Return pair for the feedback path. For settings, there is Input to adjust the input level from instrument to modular level, Mix to blend wet and dry signals, and a Dry Kill switch to remove the dry signal and achieve a 100% wet output (ideal for aux sends or effects buses).
Color and density are shaped via Dampen (wet signal tone, from bright to dark), Diffuse (sharper attack on the left, smoother ambient cloud on the right), and Length (decay time). The Reflect control manages regeneration: low for shorter reverb, high for long tails, echoes, and a tendency toward self-oscillation. If you patch external processing into Reflect Return, the Reflect knob acts as an attenuator for this return, useful for keeping feedback under control.
The module's star remains Drag: it separates and "misaligns" the delay lines, producing stuttering, time-warping, and pitch-sliding effects when turned (or modulated) while the sound resonates. Turning it left makes the effect closer to a delay; turning right makes it more reverberant, with shorter times and more obvious pitch variations when the buffer is driven. The Mode parameter determines how Drag responds to the potentiometer and control voltage, with 9 modes: unquantized, unquantized with slew (musical glide), unquantized scaled volt/oct, then quantized modes (chromatic, major, minor, pentatonic, octaves and fifths, and octaves). A mode LED visually indicates the active mode.
The dedicated CV inputs Drag CV, Mode CV, Diffuse CV, and Length CV each have their own attenuverters: unity gain fully clockwise, inversion fully counterclockwise, and cutoff at center. This allows modulation from subtle movements to wide sweeps, even unpredictable behaviors when Reflect and Length are pushed.
Sound Character
The Afterneath does not attempt to imitate a real room: its signature is a textured reverb made of reflections that can sound "crystalline," "granular," or "pingy" depending on Drag and Diffuse. The analog dry path maintains a clear presence, while the wet signal adds a very distinctive depth, ideal for ambient, post-rock, synthwave, IDM, hypnotic techno, and sound design.
At moderate settings, you get an original but controllable reverb. When Length and Reflect exceed the 12 o'clock position, the module can enter self-oscillation (normal behavior), generating drones and shifting harmonics. Combining this self-oscillation with CV modulation of Drag allows the Afterneath to behave like a very expressive voltage-controlled oscillator (without aiming for VCO precision), with modes 3 to 9 following a volt/octave logic for more "musical" trajectories.

Questions frequently asked
What width and depth should be planned for in a Eurorack case?
The module occupies 16 HP and its maximum depth is 31.75 mm. It extends less than 31.75 mm behind the panel with the power connector installed, making it compatible with skiffs depending on available space.
Can the feedback of the Afterneath Eurorack Module be processed with an external effect?
The Reflect Send/Return pair allows inserting external processing into the feedback path. Connecting to Reflect Return disables the internal feedback, while Reflect Send remains active.
Which CVs can modulate this Eurorack reverb?
Four inputs are provided for Drag, Mode, Diffuse, and Length. Each input has its dedicated attenuverter: unity gain to the right, inverted to the left, and off in the center position.
Can the module produce drones and self-oscillation?
When Length and Reflect exceed about the 12 o'clock position, self-oscillation can generate drones and evolving harmonics. CV modulation of Drag allows pitch slides; modes 3 to 9 follow a volt/octave logic.
How to obtain a 100% wet output for an effects bus?
The Dry Kill switch removes the dry signal. Then the Mix control sets the reverb level, while Dampen adjusts the tone of the wet signal.
