A Modern Icon of Creative Pitch in the EQD Galaxy
Rainbow Machine has established itself as EarthQuaker Devices' most irreverent harmonization pedal. This redesigned version doubles the power of the original and pushes the concept further: extended delay time, denser chorus, and refined "Magic" control for singing feedbacks and happy accidents worthy of the earliest electronic music laboratories.
Who Is It For, and For What?
Designed for sonic explorers, it shines in indie rock, math-rock, shoegaze, ambient, noise, post-rock, or sound design. Both in the studio and on stage, it transforms a guitar, bass, synth, or drum machine into generators of kinetic harmonies. Whether a curious beginner or an advanced musician, everyone will find an immediate playground for experimentation.
Controls and Creative Features
The heart of the system is the Pitch control (from descending fourth to ascending third, unison at the center point) with Primary for harmony level. Tracking adjusts the delay time between dry and wet signals, from tight and nervous to more spacious trails. Tone darkens or brightens the highs to shift from a more "vintage" color to modern clarity.
Secondary adds an octave linked to the Pitch position: above center, upper octave; below, lower octave; at center, a third chorus voice for three-track pads. The famous Magic is a controlled regeneration circuit that feeds voices back into each other to generate aliasing, metallic choruses, digital flanging, controlled oscillations, and "trails" that rise or fall depending on the Pitch position.
Thanks to the Flexi-Switch, each footswitch operates momentarily (held) or latching (brief press). The expression pedal takes control of Pitch for real-time sweeps. Relay true bypass ensures perfect integration on pedalboards.
The Sound
Lively, unpredictable, and musical, the Rainbow Machine ranges from lush, granular chorus to shimmering polyphonic harmonies, up to experimental textures that breathe and respond to touch. Attack hard to trigger sparkling flights, play softly for fluid pads. Depending on the setting, echoes rise or fall in pitch, offering soundscapes from ethereal dreams to controlled chaos.

Questions frequently asked
What pitch range does the Pitch control offer?
The Pitch control covers a descending fourth to an ascending third. The unison is at the central point, while Primary adjusts the harmony level. Secondary adds a higher or lower octave depending on the Pitch position.
What power supply and current draw does the EarthQuaker Rainbow Machine V2 LTD require?
It is powered by mains electricity, with a stated current draw of 68 mA.
Can the Pitch be controlled with an expression pedal?
An expression pedal can take control of the Pitch setting to perform live pitch sweeps. The Magic control then regenerates the voices to create oscillations or rising and falling trails.
Do the footswitches operate in momentary mode?
Both Flexi-Switch footswitches can be used in momentary mode by holding or in latching mode by brief press, with relay bypass.
Is this pedal suitable for bass and synths?
Designed for electric guitar, this pedal can also process bass, synths, or drum machines. Its input impedance is 1 MΩ and its output impedance is below 1 kΩ.
