A "Translucent" Overdrive in the Spirit of EarthQuaker Devices

With the Westwood, EarthQuaker Devices offers an overdrive that aims less to "replace" your sound and more to shape it: it preserves the attack, dynamics, and natural body of the instrument while adding just enough grit to go from a clean boost to a particularly musical medium gain saturation. Its role is clear: a versatile drive pedal, ideal as a foundational tone ("always-on"), yet expressive enough to become your main overdrive in rehearsal, studio, or live settings.

Built in the USA, the Westwood claims a character that is both clean and warm: it can remain subtle to thicken a clean tone or, conversely, provide rich harmonic density when pushing the Drive and Level to work the amp.

For Whom, Which Styles, and In What Contexts?

The Westwood is aimed at guitarists (and more broadly instrumentalists) who want an overdrive responsive to touch: it follows the picking hand, guitar volume, and playing nuances. It suits both beginners (simple settings, immediate results) and experienced players looking for a pedal that can integrate finely into an effects chain.

Regarding styles, it excels in blues, rock, indie, pop, post-rock, and anything requiring a clear and articulated drive. In live contexts, it helps you cut through the mix without aggression; in the studio, its "transparent" approach facilitates doubling and guitar stacking. On a pedalboard, it works very well before a fuzz to "tighten" the low end or after a boost for a more singing lead mode.

Controls and Ergonomics: Simple but Very Effective

The Westwood gets straight to the point with four knobs designed to sculpt the drive without fighting the amp. The Level control manages output volume, with enough headroom to strongly boost the amp's input. The Drive sets the amount of saturation, from light grit to denser overdrive, always maintaining good chord clarity.

The pedal's real strength comes from the active EQ: Bass operates around 80 Hz to tighten the low end, thicken a thin tone, or conversely avoid muddiness with humbuckers. Treble works around 2 kHz to adjust attack and presence: useful for taming a bright bridge pickup or restoring bite to a dark amp.

Finally, the Westwood is advertised as true bypass with relay electronic switching. An important point for integration: audio does not pass without power, even in bypass. Regarding power, it accepts a standard 9V DC (center negative) supply and requires clean power: a quality isolated output limits noise and optimizes stability on stage.

The Sound

The Westwood's character can be summed up as transparency and musicality. It colors less than a typical "mid-hump" overdrive and lets the guitar and amp's tone breathe. At low gain, it provides natural thickness, perfect for defined rhythms with a sense of "bigger" sound without crushing dynamics. Increasing the Drive adds more pronounced grit, with smooth sustain and articulation that keeps notes distinct, even on enriched chords.

Thanks to the active EQ, you can go from a very "clean" and open overdrive to a tighter, more biting texture without changing pedals: a real asset for adapting the response to a low-power combo, a more powerful head, or very different pickups. When stacked (with another drive, boost, or fuzz), it also serves as a shaping tool: it can tighten the bass, tame upper mids, and make the overall sound more controllable in the mix.
