From Heavy to Heavy Menace: Empress DNA in pedalboard format

The Heavy Menace continues Empress Effects' high-gain approach, capturing the spirit of the Heavy in a more compact format tailored for modern pedalboards. The goal remains the same: to offer massive, precise distortion that's easy to "dial in," with truly usable settings in real situations. The addition of the "Lite(ish)" mode expands the palette toward a more restrained, crunchy drive, ideal for covering both muscular rock and contemporary metal genres, without losing clarity in the attacks.

A high-gain distortion for demanding guitarists (live, studio, low tunings)

The Empress Heavy Menace is designed for guitarists seeking a high-gain distortion ready to play, capable of staying clean and defined at stage volume as well as in recording. It suits intermediate musicians looking for an easy-to-place "pro" sound, as well as seasoned players stacking multiple gain stages who expect consistent response from gig to gig.

It excels in hard rock, punk, modern metal, metalcore, and djent, while also serving as a dense crunch foundation via "Lite(ish)". The foot-controlled gate provides immediate comfort on abrupt stops and choppy riffs. In the studio, the active EQ and adjustable mid frequency speed up workflow: you sculpt the guitar to fit into a busy mix without fighting an overwhelming low end or overly harsh highs.

Settings and connectivity: fine sculpting, intelligent gate, selectable bypass

The Heavy Menace is designed as a precision tool: quick to set but very deep if you like to fine-tune. The "Channel" selector offers three voices: "Lite(ish)" for a more restrained, crunchy tone; "Heavy" for balanced, versatile high-gain; and "Heavier" for more extreme saturation with added aggression and presence in the upper spectrum. The Gain and Output controls manage distortion amount and output level, while Weight adjusts the low-end feel: increase to thicken and add body, decrease to tighten the bass and lock palm mutes, especially useful with low tunings.

The Low / Mid / High EQ is complemented by Mid Freq (200 Hz to 2.5 kHz) to precisely target the midrange area: perfect for shifting from a scooped, cutting sound to a more present guitar that cuts through the mix without pushing volume. The noise gate is adjustable via Gate Thresh and has its own footswitch, with linked activation (gate and distortion together) or independent (like two separate pedals) depending on your setup.

The pedal also offers a Gate Key input via mini-jack (TS or TRS) to control gate triggering from an external signal, handy if your upstream effects chain varies the input level. Finally, the bypass is selectable between true bypass or buffered bypass, optimizing signal clarity and stability depending on cable length and pedalboard layout.

The sound

The Heavy Menace delivers a modern, dense, and precise tone, with excellent attack definition and remarkable sustain on complex chords. The Weight control allows for massive lows without muddiness, while the Mid / Mid Freq duo offers rare midrange control at this gain level: you can build a wide guitar wall or aim for a more incisive, articulated sound that "speaks" immediately in the mix. The adaptive gate enhances the sense of cleanliness by tightening silences while letting note tails breathe when playing more legato.

It works particularly well in front of a clean or slightly crunchy amp and responds very well to a boost/overdrive upstream to tighten the attack further. Thanks to its output level, extended frequency response, and bypass options, it can also serve as a reliable high-gain solution on a stage-oriented pedalboard.
