What FAB FOUR Is For

FAB FOUR is a virtual instrument designed for composing, producing, and arranging within a "vintage pop" aesthetic: jangly guitars, soft and dynamic drums, retro keyboards, and sixties-style studio colors. It is aimed both at composers for visual media (film, TV, games) and producers seeking rare timbres and sonic signatures that are difficult to reproduce without a collection of period instruments and a suitable analog chain. Ideal for dressing a modern mix with a retro patina, creating original layers, or building a complete track around sound design inspired by EMI studios.

Main Features

A "Period-Correct" Instrument Collection

FAB FOUR brings together acoustic and electric guitars, basses, drums, keyboards, string instruments, and various additional instruments, captured with the same types of microphones historically used (Neumann, AKG, Coles, STC). The result aims for a balance between presence, transient softness, and character, to achieve an immediately musical sound in a pop/rock arrangement.

Amplifiers, Consoles, and Dynamics in the EMI Spirit

Electric guitars were recorded through period amplifiers such as Fender and Vox (models and years listed below), and the entire production relies on the same types of EMI desks and preamps, including rare references like the EMI REDD tube desks and EMI TG12345, as well as dynamics processors like Fairchild limiters and EMI RS124 compressors (Altec modified). This chain contributes a midrange grain, natural compression, and a sought-after "tape" depth.

Articulations, Velocities, and Playing Styles

Guitars are sampled with down and up strokes, multiple velocities, and picking styles, with some libraries including chords and effects. Drums are multi-sampled with up to 16 velocity layers, left/right hands, and variations linked to named styles (e.g., "A Day in the Drums," "Ticket to Drums," "Yer Drums") for livelier and more credible grooves.

Integrated ADT and Effects for Finishing Touches

The software includes a software version of ADT (artificial double tracking) with tape simulator, as well as particularly smooth filters, delay, and several reverb options. Perfect for thickening a vocal or guitar, widening a keyboard, or adding the typical movement of vintage productions.
