A Compact Format Designed for Instruments, in the Ehrlund Spirit

The Ehrlund EHR-E follows a very "tool-like" approach: a studio microphone that is robust, discreet, and quick to set up, designed to follow the instrument rather than confine it within an overly colored signature. Its reduced size facilitates integration where a larger microphone becomes cumbersome, notably around a drum kit, on a brass stand, or in front of a guitar amp. Its open and airy grille limits acoustic filtering to maintain a natural reproduction, with a sense of air and presence useful when seeking definition without harshness.

What Sound Sources is the EHR-E Made For?

Versatile by nature, the EHR-E excels whenever the source is dynamic, rich in harmonics, or difficult to isolate. On a guitar amp, it can be easily placed close to the speaker, and its tight polar pattern helps keep focus on the speaker cabinet. On drums, its size and SPL handling make it a solid candidate for toms and snare drums, delivering clear attack and good separation. On horns, brass, and symphonic instruments, it enables precise capture by limiting sounds that "bleed" to the sides, simplifying mixing when multiple sections share the same room.

It can also suit vocals, especially when a close, defined capture is desired that is easy to fit into a dense arrangement. In all cases, its 48 V phantom power and XLR connectivity make it compatible with most microphone preamps, audio interfaces, and consoles, both in studio and live configurations.

A Design Focused on Dynamics, Directionality, and Clarity

Patented Triangular Diaphragm: Speed and Precision

The unique triangular diaphragm of this model aims for a very responsive frequency response, useful for translating transients (stick attack, string snap, brass articulation) without compressing dynamics. Unlike many "classic" instrument microphones that smooth out the high end to remain forgiving, the EHR-E seeks definition and separation to maintain a clear image in a modern mix.

Extended Frequency Response to Capture Air and Harmonics

With a frequency range advertised up to 87,000 Hz, the microphone is comfortable with very high frequencies and fine harmonics. In practice, this translates into a sense of openness, better reading of micro-details, and a "faster" image on percussive or bright sources. This headroom in the extreme high end can also assist during processing (equalization, de-essing, gentle saturation), preserving margin before the sound becomes harsh.

SPL Handling: Ideal for Powerful and Close Sources

The construction is adapted to high sound pressure levels, allowing very close placements without fear of premature clipping. This is a real advantage on snare drums, toms, brass, or guitar amps, where maximizing signal-to-noise ratio and minimizing bleed is often desired. Combined with low power consumption (2.0 mA) and standard phantom power, the EHR-E integrates easily into an existing recording chain.

Tight Cardioid Directionality: More Focus, Less Bleed

Its cardioid polar pattern, described as slightly narrower than a "pure" cardioid, helps isolate the main source. In practice, this facilitates recording in real conditions: single-room drum kits, live recordings, acoustic ensembles, or studios where isolation is imperfect. The result is a more usable signal, with a solid center and better-controlled off-axis response, simplifying equalization and compression during mixing.
