Historical Context and Positioning in the Range

The ENGL E 656 Steve Morse Signature 100 is a signature amplifier developed to meet demanding specifications: a wide range of tones, exemplary note-by-note definition, and the ability to remain clear in dense arrangements. Within the ENGL lineup, it is positioned as a high-end head oriented towards modern versatility, with particular attention paid to the mids (a key area for band presence) and switching (Masters, MIDI, presets) to instantly switch from one register to another without compromise.

Who This Amp Is For

This head is aimed at intermediate to advanced guitarists seeking a tube amp capable of covering multiple roles: studio (precise takes, controlled noise thanks to the noise gate), rehearsal (power reserve and headroom), and especially stage (tone recalls via MIDI, Master A/B, and effects chains via loops). It is especially suitable for styles where articulation is essential: modern rock, hard rock, melodic metal, fusion, prog, as well as guitarists alternating tight rhythm and expressive lead. If you use multiple guitars (single coils, humbuckers, different tunings), the Mid Control Matrix on channel 3 helps you immediately find the right place in the mix.

Features and Innovations

The E 656 offers 3 channels each with independent Gain, Volume, and EQ, making it easy to create three truly distinct sonic identities (for example: clean, crunch, lead). Channels 1 and 2 feature a simple and effective 3-band EQ to quickly balance bass, mid, and treble according to your cabinet and guitar. Channel 3 stands out with the ENGL Mid Control Matrix : instead of a single mid control, you have 8 combinations between lo-mid and hi-mid, ideal for adjusting attack, roundness, and projection without changing your overall setting.

On the control side, you benefit from Master A and Master B (useful for a volume boost in solos or two output levels), as well as voicing switches: Tone, Gain Hi/Lo, Depth Punch, and a Presence control to refine the upper spectrum openness. The signal management section is tailored for modern rigs: parametric noise gate to keep playing clean even at high gain, 2 effects loops to integrate modulation, delay, or multi-effects, and a tuner output to stay in tune without disrupting the audio path. Finally, the head is MIDI controllable (MIDI in, MIDI thru, 128 presets ) to recall complete configurations from a controller, switcher, or stage system.

The Sound

With its 4x EL34 tubes and 100W power, this amp delivers a typically "all-tube" response: a crisp attack, generous dynamics, and natural compression that comes in a musical way when pushing the power stage. The cleans can remain solid and defined, with a nice reserve before breaking up, while the crunch gains grain and bite without losing chord precision. In overdrive, the ENGL signature emphasizes clarity and low-end sustain: perfect for tight rhythms, clean palm-mutes, and leads that maintain clarity. The major asset remains the work on the mids: the Mid Control Matrix allows switching from a thicker, singing lead to a sharper, more projected register to match your playing and your place in the band.
