St. James 100: the "no compromise" evolution of the St. James series
Designed as one of the brand's most ambitious projects, the St. James 100 Head takes the St. James philosophy even further: preserving the DNA of a tube guitar amp (response, attack, warmth, feel under the fingers) while drastically reducing weight and integrating a modern recording section. The goal is clear: to offer a tube head designed for today's guitarists, with a bold look and an approach that is both traditional in sound and innovative in ergonomics.
For whom and for what uses? A 100W head designed for stage, studio, and home studio
The Blackstar St. James 100 Head targets demanding guitarists, from rehearsal musicians to stage professionals, who want a true all-tube head without the usual transport constraints. Live, its 100W guarantee headroom and excellent mix presence. In studio and home studio, the reactive load and CabRig allow clean, quick recording at controlled volumes. Style-wise, it excels in rock, hard rock, muscular blues, modern metal, and any situation where articulated saturation and "organic" dynamics are sought.
Channels, controls, and connectivity: a modern head with the soul of tubes
With its 4 channels, the St. James 100 Head is designed to instantly switch from a wide clean to a snappy crunch, then to thicker, more modern saturations. The 3-band EQ (Bass, Middle, Treble) allows precise adjustment of the foundation, mid presence, and treble openness according to your guitar and cabinet. To adapt the amp to any context, the continuously variable power reduction goes down to 5W, helping you regain that "pushed" playing feel without blasting volume. The built-in reverb adds space without multiplying pedals, and the series/parallel effects loop with level selector facilitates integration of delays, reverbs, and rack or pedalboard multi-effects.
A major highlight: the amp's full signal path (including power tubes) feeds a built-in reactive load, then a CabRig DSP section based on IRs to simulate cabinet, speaker, microphone, and room. Result: you can output a mix-ready sound via XLR or record directly through the USB audio output, all while retaining the feel of a tube amp "in the room."
The sound
The St. James 100 Head is an all-tube head designed to deliver fast response, generous dynamics, and harmonically rich saturation. Its ECC83 preamp provides the grain and precision needed to sculpt sounds ranging from detailed cleans to expressive crunch, then to dense heavy saturations. The power section, with its dedicated tube architecture, delivers what guitarists expect from a 100W amp: breadth, sustain, and that natural compression when pushed. Thanks to the power reduction, you can more easily find that "sweet spot" at realistic volumes, while maintaining a consistent DI tone via CabRig.
