A Revisited SG for the Futura Series: Heritage, Attitude, and Innovations

Since its debut in 1961, the SG has established itself as one of the most recognizable electric guitar shapes: slim, edgy, aggressive, designed for access to high notes and sharp rhythms. With the Futura SG Custom Dragonfly Shift, Epiphone does not just replicate this iconic design: the brand updates it with choices clearly aimed at the "musician of today" (concert, studio, home recording, and content creation).

This Custom version retains the SG DNA (double cutaway, mahogany body, set neck) while adding premium and contemporary markers: stainless steel frets, ebony fingerboard with binding, hardware designed for tuning stability, and electronics more creative than a traditional setup. The result: an SG with an immediately iconic style, but with modern solutions that make life easier for players who play often and in varied contexts.

For Which Guitarists and Styles Is the Futura SG Custom Ideal?

The Futura SG Custom is particularly aimed at intermediate to advanced guitarists who want an SG capable of handling rehearsals, concerts, and recording sessions without compromise. Its neck with a Modern C profile promotes a natural grip, while the typical SG access to the highest frets makes solos and licks at the top of the neck very fluid.

Regarding styles, its "dual humbucker" base is naturally comfortable in rock, hard rock, punk, alternative, and muscular blues. But the coil split and phase options also open up more refined and textured territories for pop, funk with snappy tones, or indie parts that require airier timbres. It is a guitar designed for those who like to switch from rhythm to lead roles and want "several guitars in one" without changing instruments.

Sound and Electronics: Powerful Humbuckers, Creative Options, Definition Delivered

The sound recipe starts with a classic and effective combination: mahogany body and set mahogany neck. This pairing is known for offering present mids, a dense low end, and a natural sustain feel, particularly interesting for riffs and singing leads. The Tune-O-Matic and Stop Bar bridge/tailpiece duo, here in LockTone version, further enhances stability and vibration transfer, helping maintain a solid attack and consistent note sustain.

The ebony fingerboard provides a crisper response and a precise feel under the fingers, useful when you want clean attacks, clear arpeggios, or bends that stay in tune. The compound radius 10" to 14" (10" / 254 mm to 14" / 355.6 mm) is a real advantage: more comfortable for chords and rhythm playing near the neck, then flatter in the treble for easier bends and reduced fret buzz when the action is set low.

At the heart of the tonal character are two Epiphone ProBucker Ignite humbuckers (neck and bridge). In humbucker mode, expect full sounds with power and definition, suitable for modern saturations as well as classic crunch. The push/pull controls allow exploration of two essential axes: coil split for thinner, brighter, and more "biting" tones, and phase inversion for more hollowed and textured colors (particularly interesting in the intermediate position with the 3-position toggle switch). With the 2 volume / 2 tone configuration, you can also precisely balance the neck and bridge pickups and sculpt your dynamics without interrupting your playing.
