Historical Context and Positioning in the Range
Evans' Hydraulic series has established itself as a reference for drummers seeking a well-controlled sound with plenty of body and minimal unwanted overtones. This BD20HB fits within that philosophy: a drumhead designed to easily achieve a round, compact, and punchy bass drum sound without the need for multiple dampening accessories.
Who This Drumhead Is For
This bass drumhead is aimed at beginner to advanced drummers who want immediate results, whether in rehearsal or on stage. It is particularly suitable for styles where the bass drum needs to remain clear and powerful: rock, funk, pop, punk, and amplified playing contexts. In the studio, it also helps achieve controlled lows that are easy to place in a dense mix.
Features and Innovations
The BD20HB is a "Hydraulic" drumhead designed to naturally reduce resonances and shorten sustain. The goal is to minimize complex adjustments: less buzzing, a more stable response at various striking intensities, and a more "grounded" feel under the beater. Its blue color also adds a strong visual personality to the bass drum.
Sound Characteristics
On a 20-inch bass drum, this drumhead emphasizes thick lows and a defined attack, with a quick decay that avoids an overly long "boom" effect. The hydraulic character provides a darker, more compact sonic signature, ideal for drummers seeking immediate punch without relying heavily on internal muffling. The result is a bass drum that hits hard, stays clean, and maintains a solid foundation in the low end.

Questions frequently asked
Is the Evans BD20HB compatible with a 20-inch bass drum?
This head is designed for a 20-inch acoustic bass drum. Its 20" diameter corresponds to that shell size.
What sound does a blue Hydraulic bass drum head produce?
The Hydraulic design enhances the low end and reduces unwanted overtones. The short sustain promotes a defined attack and a focused response under the beater.
Does the Evans BD20HB drumhead require significant internal dampening?
Its double-ply Hydraulic construction naturally controls resonance. Internal foam use can thus be limited to achieve a more controlled low end. The quick decay prevents a prolonged boom effect.
Which music styles is this Evans bass drum head suited for?
It is suitable for rock, funk, pop, and punk settings, where the bass drum needs to stay clear in amplified playing. Its behavior is also appropriate for rehearsals, live performances, and studio work.
What is the finish of the BD20HB?
The head features a transparent blue finish.
