A "spicy pedal" in the Fulltone spirit: compact, powerful, and designed for the mix

The Fulltone Mas Malo (literally "worse," in the best sense) was conceived as a compact saturation pedal capable of covering a very wide spectrum without the constraints of some vintage fuzzes. Its guiding idea is simple: to offer a big expressive saturation (distortion and fuzz) that remains usable in real conditions, whether in an apartment, rehearsal, or on stage.

At the heart of the circuit are three carefully selected and matched NOS BC184C transistors. The result: a pedal that can roar, compress, and "sing" for a long time while maintaining a natural place in a mix thanks to a present and usable midrange.

For whom, for which styles, and in what context?

The Mas Malo is aimed at guitarists who want a single gain pedal capable of switching from punchy drive to aggressive fuzz without losing control. It suits both intermediate players (simple settings, immediate response) and experienced musicians who like to sculpt their tone through the interaction of the controls.

Style-wise, it excels in blues-rock, classic rock, hard rock, stoner, and anything that demands a thick, lively tone. Lowering Heat and Distortion yields more "studio" textures, ideal for dynamic rhythms and singing leads in the British rock style. Pushing the settings turns it into a sustain and feedback machine, perfect for solos that need to hold notes effortlessly.

On a pedalboard, its stable behavior makes it easy to place: it works very well as a main saturation pedal but can also serve as a "dirty" channel to activate for thickening an amp already on the edge of breakup. Its low-impedance output also helps maintain a firm signal feel when chaining multiple pedals.

Controls, features, and practical highlights

The Fulltone Mas Malo goes straight to the point with 4 potentiometers covering the essentials while offering real depth of adjustment. Volume (V) adjusts the output level when the effect is engaged, handy for balancing a "crunch" preset and a "fuzz" preset without messing everything up. Distortion (D) controls the saturation amount: below noon, you get tight overdrive and distortion sounds; beyond that, it shifts toward fuzzier textures.

The pedal's secret is Heat (H) : this control affects the gain and behavior of the first transistor, radically changing the pedal's attitude (attack, compression, bite, ease of feedback). It works in tandem with Distortion : at equal gain, a higher Heat can make the sound wilder and more "fuzzy."

Finally, Color (C) is not just a treble filter: it sweeps from a rich, dark sound to a brighter, sharper saturation, useful for adapting the pedal to a very round guitar, a dark amp, or conversely, taming an already bright setup.

To preserve the signal when the pedal is off, the Mas Malo offers a true bypass with FET-activated LED (a "Millennium Bypass" type), designed to limit switching noise and keep a clean signal path. For wiring, its top-mounted jacks simplify integration on compact pedalboards.

The sound

The Mas Malo delivers a thick, punchy, and very singing saturation. Its tone sits on the border between distortion and fuzz: you easily get a tight, "rock" texture for riffs, then a fuzzier, more compressed, and more aggressive tone by increasing Heat and Distortion. Sustain is generous, and feedback comes naturally, giving an "amp-like" feel even at low volume.

Its midrange is a real asset: it helps the guitar stay clear in a band without necessarily pushing volume, and allows switching from a round, fluid solo to a more incisive lead with just the Color control. The pedal responds well to right-hand attack: playing lighter yields a more docile saturation, while digging in hardens and thickens the sound.

Note: artist usages are referenced online, notably guitarist JP Buba who uses it in his rig. This confirms the Mas Malo's positioning: a modern pedal with a "muscular vintage" inspiration, designed to be directly usable on stage as well as in the studio.
