A Compact Mic Designed for Close Miking in the Heil Range

The Heil PR 28 is a small-form dynamic microphone designed to meet the typical demands of drum kits: tight placement, highly energetic sources, and the need for clean separation between kit elements. In both live and studio environments, this type of microphone stands out for its ability to handle high levels while maintaining a stable signal reading. The PR 28 follows this logic with a performance-oriented design to deliver a natural spectrum and clearly audible nuances, without mechanical noise or excessive bleed.

Intended Uses and Musicians

The PR 28 primarily targets drummers, sound engineers, and backline technicians seeking a microphone dedicated to toms that stays clean even when playing is very forceful. Its cardioid directivity and strong rear attenuation make it a relevant choice for dense setups where the proximity of cymbals and other drums complicates sound capture. Beyond the drum kit, it is also perfectly suited for percussion instruments requiring impact and control: bongos, congas, timpani, and djembes. Its compact size facilitates positioning, whether live to optimize ergonomics or in the studio to refine the angle of capture and the attack/resonance balance.

Design and Performance: Control, Isolation, and High Level Handling

Double Suspension: Cleaner Low End, Less Unwanted Vibrations

On a drum kit, much of the sound capture issues come not only from air but also from vibrations transmitted through mounts, hoops, and the kit structure. Thanks to its double suspension, the PR 28 limits the transmission of these mechanical noises. The result: sharper transients, better-controlled low frequencies, and a more usable recording at mixing stage, with fewer artifacts to correct.

Cardioid Directivity: Emphasized Source, Less Bleed

The PR 28's cardioid polar pattern is designed to favor the targeted source in close miking. Combined with a -35 dB rear attenuation, it helps reduce bleed from other kit elements, especially when toms are close to cymbals. This isolation facilitates equalization and compression while maintaining a more coherent image when multiple microphones are used on the set.

High Acoustic Pressure: Strong Hits Without Distortion

Toms and certain percussion instruments generate very high levels at impact. With a max SPL of 142 dB, the PR 28 is designed to handle loud playing techniques without issue while maintaining stable reproduction. This allows for a clear attack and solid low end without undesirable compression during peaks.

Mounting: Stand Flexibility and Accessory Compatibility

The PR 28 features an integrated thread allowing direct attachment to a standard threaded microphone boom, convenient for quick and precise placement. It is also designed for use with the optional Heil HH-1 mount when fixed mounting on drum kits equipped with metal hoops is desired. This approach offers a clean setup and helps maintain consistent positioning from one gig to another.
