Summary of This Score

Completed during the summer of 1848 (but probably conceived earlier), these three pieces were first published in Germany at the beginning of 1849, simply numbered 1 to 3. The first French edition, released at the end of the same year, gave them a new title, Three Poetic Caprices, as well as distinct intertitles that have become firmly established: "Il lamento," "La leggierezza," and "Un sospiro."

Unlike some earlier études focused on "pure" virtuosity, these pages place poetic-sound invention at the heart of the musical discourse. The pianistic work remains demanding, but here it is entirely in the service of phrasing, breathing, and sound projection, in a resolutely concertante spirit. This score is thus aimed at pianists seeking a romantic writing that is both brilliant and deeply singing, ideal for enriching a recital program.

This revised edition benefits from several newly discovered or newly accessible sources, notably the autograph that served as the reference for engraving. The result aims to bring the performer closer to the composer's intentions by offering a particularly refined musical text to approach these essential concert études of the piano repertoire.
