An Analog "Best Of": The Spirit of Two Classic Consoles in a Single Channel Strip

The HA-81A was designed as a modern channel strip capable of concentrating, in one device, two aesthetics that have become studio standards: a discrete class A microphone preamp with a strong character, and a style 81 equalizer renowned for its balance and musicality. The idea is simple: to recapture the "console sound" and the immediate working feel of a great channel strip without multiplying modules or complex chains.

Within the Elite range, the HA-81A emphasizes performance-oriented manufacturing and design: selected components, precision controls, and a decidedly professional approach. The "new" aspect here is not a gimmick promise but a coherent integration: preamp + EQ combined and optimized to work together, speeding up decision-making and quickly delivering a signal ready for recording or mixing.

For Whom and What: From Recording to Mixing, a Channel Strip That Adds Dimension

The Heritage Audio HA-81A is aimed at sound engineers, producers, and demanding home studio users who want an analog chain capable of adding character without sacrificing precision. In recording, it becomes a central piece to give identity to a vocal, anchor a bass, thicken guitars, or stabilize overheads, while maintaining excellent midrange clarity.

In mixing, its "console" philosophy allows for quick sculpting: clean gain adjustment, output compensation to maintain a consistent level, then an EQ designed to be pushed musically. Since it is an analog processing device, you benefit from a smooth workflow, no latency from software processing, and immediate response to gestures-ideal for working by ear.

Class A Preamp and Style 81 EQ: Precision Controls, Musical Curves

A Discrete Preamp Section Designed for Demanding Sources

The HA-81A preamp section is based on a discrete class A design capable of delivering up to 80 dB of gain. It incorporates a Carnhill input transformer and a St. Ives output transformer, a duo appreciated for its ability to add body, a sense of depth, and solid low-end control while preserving a clear attack.

To adapt to a wide variety of microphones and levels, the preamp offers essential studio features: -20 dB pad to handle strong sources, phase inversion to quickly solve polarity issues, and +48 V phantom power for condenser and some active microphones. The presence of an output trim is a real production advantage: you can push the gain to get the desired color while maintaining a controlled output level to your converter or next chain element.

An "Exceptionally Musical" 4-Band Equalizer with Filters

The style 81 EQ section is designed to get straight to the point: it offers a very musical behavior, particularly effective for shaping a source without making it aggressive. You have four bands plus high-pass and low-pass filters to quickly clean unnecessary low end, tame excess air, or tighten a track before compression.

The bass and treble bands provide advanced control over the curve shape with a choice between bell or shelf responses. This is one of the strengths of a "console" EQ: the same frequency area can be used either for targeted correction or broader boosting to add width. The two mid bands offer Double Q operation and a selection of 30 frequencies in total, allowing fine work on presence, intelligibility, and overall balance, whether on vocals, snare, or instrument buses.

100% Studio-Oriented Controls: Precision and More Reliable Recall

The HA-81A uses only rotary switches and precision concentric potentiometers. In practice, this translates to cleaner adjustments, a "high-end" control feel, and more comfortable work when refining a filter, dosing a mid correction, or recalling a setting close to a previous session. This approach perfectly suits studio use where reproducibility and speed are paramount, especially in intensive recording contexts.
