The Portico II Legacy Serving the Master Bus
Derived from the Portico II lineage, the MBP condenses decades of analog expertise into a bus processor ready for both mixing and mastering. Its new circuits, combined with high-precision stepped potentiometers, significantly improve headroom and dynamic range, distortion, noise, slew rate, and fidelity, all while preserving the characteristic smoothness and musicality of the brand.
Who Is It For and What Is It For?
The Portico II MBP is designed for mixing, mastering, and broadcast studios demanding flexible yet immediately musical control over dynamics and stereo imaging. On a master bus, stem, or as an external creative processor, it enhances cohesion, controls transients, and optimizes spatial perception from center to the edges of the stereo field.
Creative Features Beyond a Simple Bus Compressor
Shapable and parallel compression: Work in Feed-Forward mode for a modern, transparent response or in Feed-Back mode for a softer, "vintage" signature. Peak mode shifts detection to peaks to capture transients with a response time near 0.1 ms, while RMS mode favors average energy. The "Blend" knob facilitates parallel compression without external routing.
Intelligent limiting: The brickwall limiter, assisted by a Soft Clipper, combines recovery time constants to strike quickly on peaks while remaining slower and more musical on sustained signals, avoiding modulation distortion typical of extreme settings.
Controlled stereo image: The M-S editor adds Width and Depth with dedicated EQs targeting useful frequency bands. Reinforce the low center, open up the sides in mid/high frequencies, or route center/sides to compressors A/B for differentiated processing and a deeper soundstage.
Customizable color: The Silk/Silk+ texture per channel allows adjustment of harmonic content and timbre, from subtle analog sheen to a more pronounced coloration.
Technical specifications
| Category | compressor | Rack unit | 2 |
| Controls | ratio 1:1 to 40:1, threshold -30 dBu to +20 dBu, attack 20 to 75 ms, release 100 ms to 2.5 s, gain -6 dB to +20 dB. | Dedicated EQs | Depth EQ in LF (~250 Hz) to target low center; Width EQ in LM/HM to open the sides and extend spatial sensation. |
| Detection modes | Feed-Forward / Feed-Back; Peak/RMS selection (Peak for transient response ~0.1 ms, RMS for average energy). | 4 LED meters | stereo output levels and gain reduction. |
| Side-Chain Insert Send/Return on two balanced 6.35 mm jacks (Send always active and normalized to Return); Return usable as external trigger key (ducking). Patchbay note | normalize Send to Return to avoid disabling detection. | Output scale | -10 to +22 dBu; gain reduction: 1 to 22 dB. |
Questions frequently asked
Is the Rupert Neve Designs Portico II Master Buss Processor suitable for mastering?
This unit is designed for mixing, mastering, and broadcast applications, on master bus, stems, or external processing. Its stepped knobs allow for reproducible settings.
What compression modes are available?
Feed-Forward detection offers a modern response, while Feed-Back mode provides gentler compression. The Peak setting reacts to transients around 0.1 ms; RMS mode follows the average energy. The Blend control enables parallel compression without external routing.
What is the compressor's adjustment range?
The ratio covers from 1:1 to 40:1, with a threshold from -30 dBu to +20 dBu. Attack is adjustable from 20 to 75 ms, release from 100 ms to 2.5 s, and gain from -6 dB to +20 dB.
How does the Portico II MBP affect the stereo image?
The M-S encoder offers Width and Depth controls, with dedicated EQs. The Depth EQ targets the center low frequencies around 250 Hz, while the Width EQ affects the mid and high frequencies of the sides.
What side-chain connectivity is available?
A side-chain insert Send/Return is provided on two balanced 6.35 mm jacks. The Send remains active and normalized to the Return; on a patchbay, this normalization must be preserved to maintain detection. The Return can be used as an external key input for ducking.
