A "Seventies" Phaser Revisited in the JHS 3 Series

The JHS Pedals 3 Series was designed to offer accessible and immediate effects without sacrificing manufacturing quality. The idea is clear: essential controls, a wide range of useful sounds, and a pedal that easily integrates into any pedalboard. The 3 Series Phaser fits this philosophy with a 6-stage circuit inspired by vintage 1970s phasers, while adding modern sculpting options thanks to the mix and feedback controls.

Who Is the JHS 3 Series Phaser For?

This pedal is suitable both for guitarists discovering modulation effects and for experienced musicians seeking a versatile phaser that is quick to dial in. In clean settings, it adds movement to chords and arpeggios; in crunch and overdrive, it enhances definition and delivers the organic character typical of analog modulation. It is perfectly suited for funk, rock, pop, psychedelic, indie styles, and can also be used in ambient contexts to thicken a pad with slow, wide sweeps.

In the studio, the BLEND control makes it easy to place the effect in the mix (more subtle or very prominent). On stage, the simple controls allow you to instantly recall your settings, even when you need to adjust quickly between songs.

Simple Controls, Yet Real Creative Flexibility

The JHS 3 Series Phaser is based on three controls designed to cover the essentials of a phaser while maintaining a very musical approach. The RATE knob adjusts the LFO speed: slow for wide, hypnotic modulation; fast for a more energetic and percussive effect. WIDTH sets the depth: low for a smooth, "classy" movement, higher for a more extreme and dramatic phase.

The real highlight is the BLEND. Turning it left retains more dry signal for a subtler, more natural modulation. Turning it right increases the wet signal up to 100% wet : in this mode, the effect approaches a vibrato feel, ideal for retro colors, expressive leads, or more experimental textures.

Finally, the FEEDBACK toggle (up position) feeds part of the output back into the input, adding resonance and emphasizing certain frequencies. The result is a more intense, more "vocal" phaser that cuts through the mix better, especially effective with slightly overdriven sounds.

Sound Character

The tonal character of this pedal balances between vintage warmth and modern control. With moderate settings (moderate WIDTH, mostly dry BLEND), you get a round and elegant phase, perfect for adding life to a clean tone without altering it. Increasing the depth and activating FEEDBACK makes the sweep more pronounced, with a sharper and more "swirling" quality typical of 70s phasers.

The BLEND also controls the perception of the effect: the more wet you add, the more obvious the modulation becomes, and the 100% wet mode opens a more radical territory between vibrato and liquid modulation. The pedal responds musically to playing dynamics and changes: it can stay in the background to thicken the sound or become a signature effect depending on your settings.
