From the Angry Charlie to the Signature Model: Andy Timmons' "British Amp" DNA
At the origin of the AT+ is a simple, very "hands-on" story: Andy Timmons adopted a JHS Angry Charlie in 2013 as his main saturated channel, then sought a setting perfectly suited to his dynamics, articulation, and live needs. This collaboration gave birth to a pedal designed as a true amp channel underfoot, with a muscular grain, present mids, and an attack that remains clear even when the gain is increased.
The AT+ takes this Drive channel that became the signature of the AT model and adds a second essential stage for solos and intensity boosts: an independent Boost, designed to thicken, push, and better "grab" the Drive without losing definition.
Who Is the AT+ For? From Modern Blues Guitarists to Hard Rock
The JHS Pedals AT+ is aimed at guitarists who want a versatile saturation pedal capable of covering both rhythm and lead without multiplying boxes. It suits intermediate levels (easy and effective settings) as well as demanding musicians seeking a responsive touch and saturation that respects the playing.
In terms of styles, it feels at home in high-gain blues, rock, hard rock, fusion, and all aesthetics where a singing drive, controlled sustain, and a strong presence in the mix are sought. In the studio, it serves as a reliable "channel" to record; live, it becomes an ultra-practical Drive/Boost duo on a compact pedalboard.
Two Channels, Fine EQ, and a "Headroom" Selector: Total Control Underfoot
The Drive channel offers Volume, Drive, EQ, and Air controls. The Drive covers a very wide spectrum: slightly gritty and expressive for bluesy phrases, then increasingly saturated up to a thunderous distortion. The EQ works as a bright / dark tone control to immediately adjust the guitar's place, while the Air control adds presence-style highs to find exactly the right amount of brightness, articulation, and clarity desired.
The 3-position selector affects the overall feel (compression, openness, volume) by recreating the impression of different amp power ratings: 25W for the most compression and saturation with the least volume, 50W for a natural balance, and 100W for more volume and an open crunch, less focused.
The independent Boost channel is a slightly dirty pre-boost: it can drive the AT+ Drive for more saturation and definition, but also serve alone to push your amp or "wake up" another gain pedal. The result: a true two-channel logic in a pedal format, with coherent and musical stacking.
Sound
The AT+ delivers saturation with a decidedly "amp" character, featuring a tight yet lively grain and a very expressive pick response. The Air setting is ideal to avoid muffled saturation in a dense mix: it brings clarity without making the sound harsh if dosed finely. The 25W/50W/100W selector is a real feel tool: you move from a more compressed, easy-to-play attack to a more open, dynamic drive that lets chords breathe.
This pedal is naturally associated with Andy Timmons, and it is also used by guitarists oriented towards rock/fusion and modern lead playing (for example Marco Sfogli, as well as other musicians spotted on stage pedalboards). The idea remains the same: a dense and singing drive, capable of holding rhythm parts, then stepping forward in the band via the Boost without losing precision.

Questions frequently asked
Does the JHS Pedals Angry Charlie AT+ run on 18 V?
The power supply accepts 9 V DC with center negative and can operate on 18 V DC for increased headroom. The stated current draw is 15 mA via a 2.1 x 5.5 mm connector.
Can the boost be used independently of the distortion?
The Boost channel has its own independent footswitch and can push the Drive circuit or an amp. Its level control provides a slightly dirty pre-boost.
What sound does the 25W / 50W / 100W selector provide?
At the 25W position, the sound favors compression and saturation with less volume. The 50W position aims for a natural balance. The 100W mode increases volume and opens up the crunch with a less focused response.
What controls are available on the Drive channel?
The Drive channel includes Volume, Drive, EQ, and Air. The EQ adjusts the bright/dark balance, while Air affects the high-end presence.
Is this pedal suitable for rock and fusion solos?
Designed with Andy Timmons based on the Angry Charlie, this pedal offers a tone inspired by British amps with prominent mids. Its two footswitches, Drive and Boost, allow switching from a saturated rhythm sound to a more supported lead level.
