QUASAR: JodyJazz's "High Energy" Approach

In the world of modern saxophone mouthpieces, JodyJazz has built a solid reputation thanks to models designed for stage performance, projection, and manufacturing consistency. The QUASAR for alto saxophone clearly fits this philosophy: a model created to deliver maximum impact without sounding too thin or aggressive.
Manufactured in Savannah, Georgia, USA, the QUASAR is machined with great precision and then hand-finished. The goal is simple: to offer a reliable, stable, and consistent mouthpiece from one unit to another, so that the player experiences the same feel and balance right from the start.

For Which Saxophonists and Styles?

The JodyJazz QUASAR is primarily aimed at advanced to professional saxophonists, as well as progressing players who want to step up to a highly responsive mouthpiece. Its "ready-to-go" behavior will appeal to those who often play amplified or in dense ensembles where clarity and attack are essential.
Regarding styles, it excels in genres seeking a present and punchy alto sound: big band (especially lead), funk, fusion, pop, rock, gospel, Latin, contemporary music, and modern jazz. It remains usable at low volume thanks to its stability but is less suited for classical playing that prioritizes a very dark roundness and a very soft attack.

Sound and Design

The QUASAR stands out with a bright, direct, and energetic timbre, supported by a solid sonic foundation in the mid and low registers. This foundation notably comes from its "bullet" chamber, a chamber geometry designed to maintain density while allowing the high register to open widely.
Its high baffle (the internal ramp that guides and accelerates the airflow at the mouthpiece entrance) delivers a clear attack, immediate clarity, and very strong projection. The result is a sound that "cuts" well through the mix, with rich harmonics and no hollow feeling when pushing dynamics.
The Vibra Table plays a central role: thanks to precision indentations that reduce mass under the reed, vibration starts faster and with less effort. The playing sensation is very responsive, with precise articulation and a wide dynamic range from soft tones to aggressive playing, without any sense of restriction.
Finally, the facing curve (the length and curvature of the table where the reed gradually lifts) is reported to be very short, promoting quick response and making the altissimo register particularly accessible. The entire mouthpiece is made of high-quality ebonite (hard rubber), offering comfortable mouth contact and consistent response across the full range.

Recommended Compatible Accessories

The QUASAR is used with alto saxophone reeds (cane or synthetic). With its 1.98 mm opening and high baffle, many saxophonists prefer slightly softer reed strengths than usual to maintain flexibility and endurance. It is also designed to work with most ligatures and mouthpiece caps intended for alto ebonite mouthpieces. For daily maintenance, a protection patch (for comfort and longevity) and a suitable swab for internal cleaning are simple and effective choices.
