JodyJazz QUASAR: A Radical Mouthpiece in the Brand's Alto Range

With the QUASAR, JodyJazz delivers an alto saxophone mouthpiece focused on power, response speed, and presence. Its approach clearly emphasizes airflow management and real-world performance: sharp attacks, strong projection, and the sensation of a mouthpiece that "opens up" as soon as you push the air column. It's a deliberate choice for saxophonists seeking a contemporary, incisive, and highly responsive sound without falling into a hollow tone.
Manufactured at the JodyJazz factory in Savannah, Georgia, USA, the QUASAR continues the brand's high-end tradition: CNC machining for consistency, followed by hand finishing for fine optimization of playing surfaces. Each mouthpiece is measured and individually tested, a crucial step to ensure consistent feel and tuning from one piece to another.

Who Is This Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece For?

The JodyJazz QUASAR primarily targets advanced to professional saxophonists who are already comfortable with an open embouchure and capable of sustaining a stable air column. Its design (high baffle and short facing ) rewards clear projection and precise articulation, with immediate feedback under the fingers. If you like feeling that the mouthpiece responds "instantly," this will be your element.
In terms of styles, it naturally fits modern jazz, funk, fusion, pop, rock, contemporary music, and big band (especially in lead alto roles). For classical use or very chamber music contexts, its bright and projected character may seem too direct: a darker, more centered mouthpiece is often more appropriate.

Sound and Design

The QUASAR's personality is clear: a bright, energetic, and highly projected timbre, with a sharp attack and excellent clarity. Where some very bright mouthpieces can become thin or harsh, the "bullet" type chamber helps preserve body in the sound: the mids remain rich and the lows retain solidity, providing a full presence even at high volume.
The "Vibra Table" is a key feature: its indentations reduce mass under the reed and promote freer vibration. The result is fast response, a very lively feel, and a particularly wide dynamic range: you can move from a soft pianissimo to an explosive fortissimo without feeling a ceiling. This responsiveness also benefits short attacks, ghost notes, and rhythmic playing, where precise sound onset makes all the difference.
The very short facing and high baffle make the altissimo register more accessible: notes speak quickly, and the response in the upper register remains stable when the air is well channeled. The mouthpiece stays free-blowing, without excessive resistance, allowing comfort even when seeking maximum projection.

Recommended Compatible Accessories

To fully exploit this mouthpiece, a standard ligature for alto saxophone ebonite mouthpieces (well-fitted and centered) is a safe choice, allowing the reed to vibrate with minimal constraint. In practice, many players also appreciate slightly softer reeds than their usual strength on this type of design (open facing and short facing), to maintain comfort while benefiting from the power reserve.
For daily protection and maintenance, a mouthpiece cap suitable for alto size, a mouthpiece patch, and a swab (for mouthpiece or alto saxophone) are useful additions to preserve the table, maintain a stable feel, and extend the mouthpiece's lifespan.
