A Keeley designed as a "best of" cult overdrives and distortions

Founded in 2001 in Oklahoma City by Robert Keeley, the brand first gained recognition through its modifications and rebuilds of effects, with a strong emphasis on assembly quality and the choice of low-tolerance components. This "boutique" approach quickly attracted renowned musicians and built Keeley's reputation around a simple goal: to offer musical, reliable, and immediately inspiring pedals.

The SUPER RODENT perfectly fits this philosophy: it combines two legendary saturation worlds within a single enclosure. The idea is to easily switch from a tight, articulate overdrive to a more biting distortion with a denser grain, while maintaining the coherence of an analog circuit designed to stay expressive and easy to dial in.

For whom, which styles, and in what contexts?

The Keeley SUPER RODENT is aimed at guitarists who want a versatile drive pedal capable of serving both as an "always-on" effect (edge of breakup, crunch, rhythm drive) and as a sharper saturation for riffs and leads. It suits intermediate players (simple settings, immediate results) as well as experienced musicians who stack gains and sculpt their tone via guitar volume.

Stylistically, it sits at the heart of modern needs: punchy blues, classic rock, punk, hard rock, indie, and any situation where a saturation that remains clear in the mix is sought. On a pedalboard, it can serve as the main drive in front of an amp already in crunch, or as a gain generator in front of a clean channel, with enough character reserve for both stage and studio recording.

Features and design: simplicity, efficiency, and true analog feel

Designed 100% analog, the SUPER RODENT emphasizes touch and responsiveness: the pick "grabs" just right, chords stay defined, and playing nuances come through naturally. The benefit of a dual overdrive/distortion personality is the ability to adapt the saturation texture to the guitar (single coil, humbucker), the amp (British, American, clean/drive), or the role in the band (solid rhythm, cutting lead).

Operating from 9V to 18V is a practical advantage: at 9V, the pedal often feels tighter and more compressed, perfect for rock and tight riffs. At 18V, you typically gain more headroom before saturation, better low-end control, and a sense of "headroom," which can provide more ease on open chords, delays/reverbs placed after, or very clean amps.

Sound

The SUPER RODENT delivers saturation with a strong character, featuring a nice presence in the mids and a precise attack. In overdrive mode, you easily get an organic grain, ideal for pushing an amp, thickening a rhythm part, or adding dimension to a Strat/Tele without losing articulation. In distortion mode, the sound becomes more aggressive and "biting," with a tighter grain and increased sustain feel for solos.

Its strength lies in balance: enough color to give identity, but enough definition to avoid a "mushy" effect on chords. It responds very well to guitar volume: slightly lowering the volume pot cleans up the sound while preserving texture, making it very musical live. The black and yellow enclosure, clearly visible on a pedalboard, also reflects its positioning: a characterful pedal designed to be used, not just collected.
