Historical Context and Positioning in the Range

The Laney LA-STUDIO follows the spirit of the amps that shaped the brand's identity, with a direct lineage claimed from the Laney Supergroup of the late 1960s. The idea is simple: to recapture that lively and organic "British" character, but in a format designed for modern creation. Within the Black Country Customs series, it positions itself as an ultra home-studio and recording-oriented head: low power, tube circuit, and above all an integrated Two Notes ecosystem to go cab-less whenever desired.

Who This Amp Is For

The LA-STUDIO is aimed at intermediate to professional level guitarists who want a characterful amp, responsive to playing, and usable daily at home or in the studio. It is particularly suited for situations where volume control is necessary (apartments, studios, late-night sessions) while retaining the feel of a real tube power section. Style-wise, it excels in rock, blues, hard rock, and anything requiring expressive crunch and saturations that shape with guitar volume and pick attack.

Features and Innovations

This head offers a "plug and play" architecture designed for today's musicians: tube preamp (3x ECC83) and power stage (1x 12BH7) for tone, plus an integrated Two Notes Torpedo module to handle cab simulation and direct recording. The amp is built around 2 channels with a very musical approach: Treble and Bass inputs (each with dedicated inputs) and two gain controls (Gain 1 for Treble, Gain 2 for Bass) to adjust drive level and tonal balance at the source. The tone section remains immediate with a 3-band EQ complemented by a Presence control to open up the high end and adjust attack in the mix. For studio and live integration, there is a DI output, a headphone output, MIDI (In/Out/Thru), and a USB input for control and settings related to the Torpedo.

The Sound

The Laney LA-STUDIO is a fully tube amp with a very "hands-on" feel: fast response, natural compression that builds gradually, and that British grain rich in harmonics. In clean mode, you get a tight, detailed clear sound with controllable brightness via the Presence. In crunch, the amp really shines: sharp attacks, expressive mids, and a drive that's easily adjusted by guitar volume. In higher gain saturation, it delivers a vintage, dense, and singing texture, ideal with overdrives, fuzz, and boosts (notably to recapture classic rock tones). This aesthetic is tied to the Supergroup heritage, and this lineage is reflected in the usage by iconic artists: Tony Iommi is historically linked to the Laney sound and has been seen with this LA-STUDIO format, giving a good indication of the sonic playground targeted (massive riffs, present mids, character). The Two Notes integration finally allows exploiting this grain in direct recording with a credible feel, practical for layering tracks in the studio without increasing volume constraints.
