Légère: a synthetic reference since 1998

Renowned for its highly "engineering" approach, the Légère brand relies on expertise born from the collaboration between Guy Légère (chemist and clarinetist) and Mark Kortschot (composite materials specialist). Since 1998, their research has aimed at a clear goal: to offer a synthetic reed capable of providing a response and musicality close to cane, while delivering the consistency and longevity sought by many musicians.

Made from polypropylene, this reed uses a manufacturing process that aligns the material to finely adjust stiffness and density. The brand also emphasizes the absence of added fiberglass or unnecessary chemical agents, ensuring safe and comfortable daily use.

For whom and in which playing contexts?

This Légère reed for bass clarinet is intended for clarinetists of intermediate to advanced level, as well as orchestra, ensemble, or chamber music players who want to try synthetic without "shifting" toward an overly bright tone. It is particularly suitable for contexts where stability is crucial: long rehearsals, concerts in variable conditions, alternating between heated venues and more humid rooms.

Its sound profile, described as more round and dark, naturally suits the classical repertoire and ensemble sections. It can also be relevant in pop or film music when seeking a homogeneous low register foundation and reliable response, without the occasional surprises associated with cane.

Sound and design

With its thicker tip, this reed emphasizes timbre density and sound stability in the low register of the bass clarinet. The expected result is controlled projection, a "settled" sound sensation, and useful homogeneity to blend within an ensemble. The strength 3.25 corresponds to a rather firm resistance level: strength refers to the stiffness of the reed (the required pressure sensation), which directly influences stability, endurance, and ease in dynamics.

In daily use, synthetic provides a very consistent response: no pre-conditioning needed before playing, no water absorption, and a reed that retains its characteristics longer. It can also be disinfected, a valued feature for intensive use (lessons, orchestra, performances). If you are looking for a synthetic reed capable of maintaining a sound aesthetic close to cane while gaining consistency, this model is a particularly coherent option.

Recommended compatible accessories

To protect your reed and extend its lifespan, a reed case (rigid storage box) is highly recommended: it keeps the reed flat, prevents tip shocks, and facilitates transport in the case. A bass clarinet swab can also help keep the mouthpiece and barrel clean to maintain stable response and limit deposits.
