Since the foundational model of the string quartet, writing for a different formation involves rethinking the balance and function of the added instrument. In this Quintet, Bruno Mantovani chooses the configuration with two violas (alongside two violins and a cello) to explore a sound that is both homogeneous and contrasted, where the cello can become a true harmonic pillar and where dialogues reorganize according to changing combinations.
The piece opens with a long unison melody, gradually enriched by ornamentation. Little by little, the texture thickens: each instrument asserts its individuality while fitting into an overall coherence.
