A Classic from 1974: Maxon's Answer to Legendary Fuzzes
Originally designed in 1974, the Maxon D&S (Distortion & Sustainer) fits into the great tradition of transistor saturations of the era: thick, singing, and naturally compressed. Its sonic DNA clearly evokes the spirit of vintage "Muff-style" fuzzes, but with a tighter and more controlled approach, designed to better preserve the playing feel and the identity of your guitar and amp.
Who Is the D&S For, and Which Styles Does It Make a Difference In?
The D&S is aimed at guitarists who want generous saturation without falling into an indistinct mush. It suits both intermediate players (simple settings, immediate results) and advanced musicians looking for an expressive fuzz/distortion that is usable on stage.
In terms of styles, it excels in 70s rock, hard rock, grunge, stoner, garage, doom, but can also be used in blues rock to thicken the sound and extend sustain. In the studio, it provides a dense and focused gain wall; live, its good articulation helps rhythm parts and solos stay clear in the mix.
Settings and Design: Simple, Effective, Designed for the Pedalboard
The Maxon D&S goes straight to the point with three controls: Distortion for the amount of gain, Tone to shape the spectral balance, and Balance to adjust the output level. The tone sweep is designed to remain musical and usable, tightening the EQ to preserve definition, including on chords.
The pedal features a Normal/Effect switch for activation, and a buffered JFET bypass with a low-impedance output: a real plus for driving longer cable runs or chaining other effects without losing presence or dynamics.
The Sound
The D&S delivers a warm, thick, and highly sustained saturation, with natural compression that makes leads fluid and "singing." Where some heavily loaded fuzzes can mask the original sound, the D&S maintains a more direct feel and better clarity : sharper attacks, controlled bass, and adjustable highs to shift from a heavy tube-amp style distortion to a more granular vintage fuzz.
Result: an ideal pedal for building a big sound while retaining enough articulation for complex chords and fast passages.
