A "Boosted" OD-9: The Nine Series Takes the Concept Further
The OD-9 Pro+ follows the lineage of essential Japanese overdrives, featuring the DNA of a mid-focused circuit designed to "wake up" an amp or tighten saturation. Maxon evolves the formula with a more generous gain stage and especially options tailored for the stage: an activatable mid boost and switchable operating voltage to gain fullness and responsiveness.
For Which Guitarist, Styles, and Contexts?
The Maxon OD-9 Pro+ suits both the beginner guitarist looking for their first "real" overdrive pedal and the experienced musician wanting a reliable foundation to build a tone. In blues and rock, it serves as the main drive, with a singing grain and nice natural compression. In hard rock and metal, it becomes an excellent boost tool in front of a saturated channel: the Mid Boost helps cut through the mix, tightens the low end, and makes palm mutes clearer.
In the studio, it is valuable for stacking gain stages cleanly; live, its simple operation and mechanical bypass make it a "no surprises" pedal. It is notably found on rock/metal pedalboards, including those of Ola Englund, Terrance Hobbs, and Tim Howley.
Controls, Modes, and Design: Simple on the Surface, Formidable in Practice
On the front panel, the essential ergonomics are present: Drive for saturation level, Tone to adjust brightness, and Level to set output volume to push the amp's input. Added to this is a Mid Boost switch that enhances mids (ideal for leads), as well as a 9V/18V selector: at 9V, the behavior is more "vintage" and compressed; at 18V, the sound opens up, dynamics increase, and the pick attack becomes more precise.
The True Bypass switching preserves the signal when the pedal is off, and the pedal can run on a 9V battery or via an external DC power supply (pedalboard format).
The Sound
The OD-9 Pro+ offers a singing overdrive, mid-centered, that thickens the guitar without drowning it: perfect for adding body to single coils or bringing definition to humbuckers in a dense mix. The response to playing remains very musical: lowering the guitar volume cleans up the grit easily; playing harder yields more bite. The Mid Boost (+3 dB at 800 Hz) acts like a "spotlight" on presence: riffs become clearer, solos cut through without excessive volume increase, and sustain feels more apparent.
In 18V mode, the pedal gains headroom and articulation: chords remain more distinct, the low end is better controlled, and the attack becomes firmer-a real plus with high-output pickups.

Questions frequently asked
What does the 18V mode change on the Maxon OD-9 Pro+?
The 9V/18V selector changes the operating voltage: at 18V, the headroom increases and the attack becomes more precise. Chords remain more distinct and the low end is better controlled, especially with high-output pickups.
Is the Mid Boost useful for solos?
With a +3 dB boost at 800 Hz, the Mid Boost emphasizes the midrange to help solos stand out in the mix.
What power supply should be used with this Maxon pedal?
The external power supply requires 9V DC with a negative center, with a current draw up to 35 mA depending on the selected mode. A 9V battery can also be used. The 18V operation is selected on the pedal without an external 18V power supply specified.
What connections are available on the OD-9 Pro+?
The connectivity includes a mono 6.35 mm jack input and output. The input impedance is 500 kOhm, while the output impedance is 10 kOhm.
Is it suitable for boosting a saturated metal amp?
Its analog circuit with JRC4558 can be placed before a saturated channel to tighten the low end and make palm mutes clearer. The True Bypass switching preserves the signal when the effect is off.
