Developed within the CAE (Custom Audio Electronics) universe and adapted to the MXR pedal format, it addresses a very concrete need of modern pedalboards: regaining the feel of a guitar plugged "directly" into the amp, even with many effects, long cable runs, or devices with varied impedances.
Who is the MXR CAE Buffer for, and in which situations does it make a difference?
This utility pedal is aimed at all guitarists (and bassists) who want a more stable and clearer signal, both in studio and live settings. It is particularly relevant if you use a large pedalboard, a tuner at the end of the chain, a switcher, or if your amp is far away on stage. In practice, it helps recover highs, definition, and more consistent dynamics, especially when chaining several true bypass pedals or effects with less-than-ideal inputs.
Integration tip: generally place it at the start of the chain (after the guitar) to "drive" the entire pedalboard, or at the end of the chain to secure the cable run to the amp. If you use a very sensitive vintage fuzz (like germanium) or certain wah pedals, try placing it after these effects, as a buffer placed too early can alter their interaction with the pickups.

The gain slider provides up to +6 dB to compensate for a level drop or to equalize multiple signal paths.
What filter adjustments does this MXR buffer offer?
The Lo Cut reduces bass frequencies by 6 dB at 140 Hz to clean up a congested low end. The Hi Cut cuts highs by 6 dB at 7 kHz to soften excessive brightness. These two switches work in addition to the gain setting.
Can a tuner be connected to the additional output?
The additional output accepts a tuner, a second effects chain, or a second amplifier. Its operation can be selected between buffered or true bypass mode.
What power supply is required for the CAE Buffer?
A 9 V DC center-negative power source is required, with a consumption of 43 mA; a 9 V battery can also be used. A 9 V DC power output is provided to power another pedalboard element, subject to total consumption being verified.
