A New Chapter in the Heritage Line
The M28 is part of the Heritage range as a unique creation, born from the same exacting standards as the M1 Tube. Its development brought together major figures in microphone design: Eckehard Dux, Andreas Grosser, and Drew Myburgh. This lineage is immediately felt in the chosen approach: not to copy an existing circuit, but to design a microphone with a strong sonic identity and a fully mastered architecture. Its history dates back to work aimed at reliably replacing the famous VF14M tube, which has become rare over the years. Since 2008, the goal was to preserve a certain audio behavior, with its dynamic response, grain, and way of reacting to level variations. The M28 represents the culmination of this research by adapting it not to a tube microphone, but to an unprecedented FET design.
Compared to a more classic FET approach, the M28 pushes the search for texture and harmonic behavior much further. Where a traditional FET often favors speed, clarity, and neutrality, this model adds a sensation of substance and depth reminiscent of great tube microphones, while maintaining the stability and ease of use of a transistor circuit.
A High-End Microphone for Studios That Want to Capture Big
The M28 is aimed at sound engineers, producers, professional studios, and demanding artists looking for a central microphone capable of enhancing a source from the recording stage. On a lead vocal, it can provide a wide image, immediate presence, and density that reduce the need for corrective EQ or compression. Its versatility makes it equally relevant for acoustic instrument recordings, overheads, pianos, guitars, strings, or certain amp miking situations when seeking a balance between definition, breadth, and musicality. The five polar patterns allow adapting the mic to the recording context, room acoustics, and desired rejection level.
This positioning makes it a particularly interesting choice for studios wanting a character microphone without limiting themselves to a single color. The M28 can deliver both a clean and articulated sound as well as a fuller, more enveloping register, depending on the source, placement, and selected polar pattern.
An FET Architecture Like No Other
The main asset of the M28 lies in its proprietary "tube-like" circuit. It is not a simple FET mic tuned to sound warmer. The design aims to recover certain behaviors associated with tube electronics, especially in how the signal gains body, develops texture, and retains a sense of movement in transients. This philosophy allows for two sonic readings within the same microphone. On one hand, you get the foundation, precision, and low noise floor expected from a very good FET. On the other, the M28 can produce a more organic signature, denser in the midrange, with harmonic presence that quickly gives the impression of a "already produced" sound.
Extended Polar Patterns and Switching Designed for Reliability
The project was initially imagined as a cardioid-only model. Its evolution to five polar patterns makes it much more flexible to integrate into a modern studio setup. Figure-8 for duo recordings or Mid-Side techniques, hypercardioid to enhance isolation, cardioid for most vocals, wide cardioid to open the ambiance a bit more, omnidirectional to capture the room naturally: the M28 covers a wide range of scenarios.Selection is done via miniature detented switches integrated on the front panel. This design choice addresses a concrete durability issue, as selectors placed on the microphone body are often subjected to heavy use. Here, the mechanics have been designed to remain robust while ensuring a clear and precise setting change.
CK12 Capsule, Custom Transformer, and Controlled Output Level
The M28 features a German-made CK12 capsule, a choice that contributes to its open, detailed, and three-dimensional sound. This capsule is paired with a transformer designed to specifications by Pikatron, an essential element for structuring the low end, stabilizing the output stage, and preserving the richness of the audio message. With a frequency response of 30 Hz to 20 kHz, a sensitivity of 9 mV/Pa, and an equivalent noise level of 15 dBA, the M28 provides a solid foundation for precision recordings. Its maximum SPL of 134 dB without pad already allows it to handle substantial sources, while the switchable 0 dB or -6 dB pad offers additional headroom in the most energetic configurations.
In daily use, this translates to a microphone capable of retaining detail on fine nuances while maintaining composure on powerful vocals or expressive instruments. It is this combination of refinement, authority, and flexibility that distinguishes the M28 in a high-end studio environment.
