A New Step in the Evolution of Roland V-Accordions
The V-Accordion series was designed to preserve the expressiveness and portability of the accordion while radically expanding the musical scope through digital technology. The Roland FR-4x embodies this philosophy: a portable format, a familiar playing feel, and above all a sound architecture and user interface directly inspired by the high-end FR-8x model. The result: a modern instrument ready for stage, studio, and daily practice without sacrificing the accordion's DNA.
Who Is It For and What Are Its Uses?
The FR-4x targets accordionists who want to play across multiple repertoires (musette, pop, world music, more contemporary styles) with a single instrument. It is suitable for silent practice with headphones as well as rehearsals and concerts, thanks to its built-in amplification and direct Line Out connection to a mixer or PA system.
For musicians working in hybrid setups, the FR-4x becomes a true control center: it can drive electronic instruments via MIDI, and it allows easy recording of ideas for playback, sharing, or production use.
A "Traditional" Accordion Feel with Modern Possibilities
Natural and Expressive Play Supported by an Ultra-Responsive Bellows
At the heart of the FR-4x, the high-sensitivity pressure detection bellows ensures immediate response, essential for capturing the nuances, attack, and breathing unique to accordion playing. The bellows resistance regulator lets you adjust the inertia according to your preferences, for a softer or firmer feel depending on style and technique.
Handling remains intuitive thanks to the 37-key right-hand keyboard (velocity-sensitive) and the 120-button left hand, a format appreciated for its versatility in dance halls, orchestras, or more intimate ensembles.
A Wide Sonic Universe: World Accordions, Orchestral, Organs, and Drums
Where an acoustic accordion is limited to a single sonic identity, the FR-4x opens a ready-to-use and customizable catalog. You have access to 100 accordion sound sets (including 67 preloaded) to switch from musette registers to more international colors within the same program. Added to this are 162 orchestral sounds, 32 organ sounds, and 3 drum kits to expand arrangements, thicken accompaniment, or transform your accordion into a true "one-man band."
For finishing touches and spatial effects, chorus, reverb, and rotary effects allow you to sculpt the sound according to context: an intimate headphone ambiance, a wide front-of-house sound, or a more organic texture on organ sounds.
Stage-Ready: Built-In Amplification and Dedicated Outputs
On the go, the integrated amplification system (two speakers and a tweeter) provides clear sound across a wide frequency range, convenient for playing without heavy setup. In concert, the Line Out lets you avoid microphone constraints and send a direct signal to the PA, while maintaining personal monitoring via the headphone output when needed.
USB, Built-In Recorder, Extensions: An Open Instrument
The USB port facilitates practice with playbacks and content management. The FR-4x also includes a built-in audio recorder: you capture your performances, save them to a USB stick, then transfer files to a computer to archive your work or share your takes. USB also serves to save your settings, a valuable feature when preparing multiple sets or alternating rehearsals and concerts.
Finally, the FR-4x offers four expansion ports to access sound libraries, with Balkans and Dallapé expansions pre-installed, as well as a dedicated editor to fine-tune the instrument according to your needs.
