For Which Basses and Bassists?

This system is aimed at bassists who appreciate the versatility of an onboard preamp without complex EQs. Regarding integration, it is designed for basses with a 4-button layout. On many recent active basses featuring a side jack and a battery compartment, installation generally requires no major modifications. On a passive bass, you'll need to allocate space for a 9V battery and, if necessary, relocate the jack output to the side of the instrument.

Note: this preamp is designed for passive pickups and is not compatible with active pickups requiring anything other than a 250K or 500K volume/balance potentiometer.

Smart Controls, Instant Bypass, and Ready-to-Install Wiring

The 4-button layout is designed to get straight to the point. You have a master volume for easy level control, a balance knob to blend neck and bridge pickups, then the famous VTC (Vintage Tone Control) and stacked Treble/Bass EQ. The VTC acts like a passive tone control: fully clockwise, the response is neutral; turning it down gradually softens the highs for rounder, vintage textures.

The VTC knob features a push/pull function that allows you to bypass the preamp: handy for instantly comparing active/passive tones, securing a gig if the battery is low, or simply returning to your bass's raw character. Finally, the whole system is delivered pre-wired, with longer cables between potentiometers to better accommodate cavities that don't exactly match Sadowsky standards, and screw terminals on the balance pot for easier connection of hot and ground pickup wires.

The Sound

The tonal character is typically Sadowsky: a sense of high-end clarity, with lows that gain impact and sustain, and highs that add definition without harshness. The boost-only EQ encourages a studio-style approach: you start from a neutral base (bass and treble pots fully counterclockwise) and add just enough to make the instrument stand out in the mix.

The Bass +18 dB and Treble +18 dB range offers a comfortable reserve: a slight boost is often enough to add fingerstyle body, slap snap, or pick attack air. Thanks to the passive VTC, you can then smooth the top end to maintain immediate musicality, even with treble boost.
