From ML-1 to ML-1A: a New Step in the Virtual Microphone System
At its launch, the ML-1 marked a turning point by making accessible a palette of colors inspired by vintage studio microphones, from modern classics to iconic ribbons. With the ML-1A, Slate Digital consolidates this approach: the microphone gains practicality thanks to a sleeker format (dark gray metal body and revised grille), while bringing concrete improvements for everyday recording. The most notable evolution on the recording side is the addition of a 3-position pad, which broadens usage on very dynamic sources. At the same time, the Virtual Microphone System has been redesigned to better exploit this neutral capture base and refine the modeling experience.
A Versatile Microphone for Studios, Home Studios, and Demanding Creators
The ML-1A is a large-diaphragm cardioid condenser designed to become an all-around microphone: lead vocals, spoken word, choirs, acoustic guitars, overheads, room mics, percussion, or close miking on amps. Its "ultra-linear" approach allows for a very faithful starting track, ideal for sculpting color later in the mix. If you are looking for a microphone capable of covering many sessions without multiplying references in your collection, the ML-1A is designed to centralize the recording chain while maintaining a consistent sound.
Advanced Modeling, Built-in Pad, and Modern Plugin Workflow
0/-10/-20 dB Pad: Control Over Loud Sources Without Compromise
The three-position attenuator facilitates high-level recordings: you maintain a clean capture, avoid unwanted saturation, and keep comfortable headroom for transients. With up to 145 dB SPL (pad -20 dB), the ML-1A performs well where a classic large diaphragm can quickly reach its limits.
A Neutral Base Designed for "Color on Demand"
The 1-inch large-diaphragm capsule and "neutral" design aim to minimize coloration at the source. The result: microphone and preamp modeling applies more predictably, with a more credible timbre sensation and more natural placement in the mix, while benefiting from a self-noise of 8 dB for quieter recordings.
