A Masterful Tribute to Both Eras of the "87 Style"
The UT Twin87 condenses in a single chassis the sonic DNA of the historic and modern versions of the famous "87 style." United studied components, topologies, and tolerances to reproduce differences in polarization, de-emphasis, and dynamic behavior without digital artifices. The result: two authentic signatures, instantly selectable.
For Whom? Lead Vocals, Voice-Over, and Demanding Studios
Designed as a "desert island mic," the UT Twin87 excels on sung vocals, voice-over, demanding podcasts, acoustic instruments, and overheads. Its low self-noise, high SPL handling, and full polar patterns make it a reliable tool in professional studios as well as premium home studios.
Key Features and Innovations
Two Authentic Vintage/Modern Circuits
In Vintage mode, the capsule is phantom-powered for a warmer, more forgiving response. In Modern mode, a FET oscillator raises the polarization voltage (around 63 V), increasing sensitivity and providing clarity, articulation, and reach.
Custom UT-K87 Capsule
Machined from brass, with double isolated backplates, 6-micron PET film, and 24k gold membrane deposited in a clean room: this capsule offers unparalleled consistency, silky mids, and precise highs without harshness.
Wide-Core Transformer Made in the USA
With an oversized metal core, the United transformer avoids any bottleneck, preserves low frequencies, handles high SPLs, and delivers an open and deep image.
Switchable RF Filter and "True-Cardioid" Mode
Enable/disable RF filtering on demand. In cardioid, the "true-cardioid" decouples the rear diaphragm for a slightly higher level and reduced noise without sacrificing polarity selection.

Questions frequently asked
Is the United Studio Technologies UT Twin87 suitable for sung vocals and voice-over?
Its large-diaphragm capsule and self-noise under 10 dB in cardioid pattern make it suitable for recording sung vocals, voice-overs, and podcasts. The Vintage and Modern modes allow adjustment of the sonic character depending on the source. The Modern mode raises the polarization voltage to about 63 V to increase sensitivity.
What polar patterns does this studio microphone offer?
Three polar patterns are available: omnidirectional, cardioid, and figure-8. A true-cardioid mode decouples the rear diaphragm in cardioid to reduce noise and achieve a slightly higher output level.
What is the difference between the Vintage and Modern modes of the UT Twin87?
In Vintage mode, the capsule is phantom powered with a standard polarization for a warmer response. The Modern mode uses a FET oscillator and a polarization of about 63 V, delivering more clarity and articulation.
Can it record very loud sound sources?
With a maximum sound pressure level of 136 dB, increased to 145 dB using the -10 dB pad, this microphone handles high SPLs with less than 0.5% total harmonic distortion.
What connectivity and accessories are included with this microphone?
Output is via XLR with a 27 ohm output impedance and a UT Series transformer made in the USA. A spider shock mount is included for mounting, while the milled solid brass body has an electroplated nickel finish.
