The NU-33 was designed with a philosophy of "perfect imperfections": instead of seeking smooth hi-fi modulation, it embraces the warmth, softness, and small breaks that give a worn record its charm. It captures the spirit of an organic chorus/vibrato, enriched by surface noises (hiss, crackles, pops) and turntable-like behaviors such as speed variations and skips, for instantly nostalgic textures.
Who is the NU-33 for, and in which styles does it make a difference?
The NU-33 is aimed at guitarists (and bassists) who want to add character to their sound without stacking effects: indie, lo-fi, shoegaze, dream pop, ambient, post-rock, instrumental hip-hop, but also rawer rock when looking for a "dirty and lively" modulation. In the studio, it adds instant patina to overly clean takes; live, its tap functions and momentary actions turn modulation into a true performance element. On a small pedalboard, it can also replace both a chorus, a vibrato, and much of the "cassette/vinyl" aesthetic.
Controls, modes, and functions: modulation playable like an instrument
The NU-33 combines speed and intensity (rate/flutter) settings with mix control via an analog blend (perfect for preserving attack and clarity) and a level control to adjust output volume. You can fine-tune the movement through 3 waveform shapes (ranging from gentle flutter to more pronounced oscillation), and color the overall sound with a high pass or low pass filter (or bypass in the center) depending on whether you want to brighten the modulation or darken it in a "vintage 45 rpm" style.
To go beyond classic chorus/vibrato, the NU-33 includes performance features: tap tempo, momentary speed ramping (acceleration/deceleration on demand), and a vinyl skip mode with hold to create typical "groove skip" cuts/stutters. The assignable expression/CV input allows you to control a parameter with your foot or from a modular setup, for smooth transitions and perfectly controlled intensity swells.
The sound
The NU-33's sonic signature is warm, sticky, and textured : a chorus that can remain subtle and wide or shift into a more unstable vibrato, with that little pitch "shiver" that immediately evokes tape or vinyl. The noise generator is not just a decorative addition: it adds air, depth, and a "living" quality to sustained notes while enhancing lo-fi atmospheres. Depending on the filter selected and waveform, you can achieve very musical and smooth modulation or, conversely, darker and wavering oscillations ideal for dreamy intros, open chords, and lead lines that need to stand out.
