The C-800G, a benchmark for major vocal productions
The Sony C-800G PAC holds a unique position among tube studio microphones. Used by artists such as Dr. Dre, Eminem, Mariah Carey and Céline Dion, it has established itself in settings where the voice needs to remain front and center. Its sonic character combines presence, precision and openness in the upper frequencies.
Its custom capsule is inspired by the K67 configuration and incorporates elements from the legacy of the Sony C-37A. However, the C-800G is not simply intended to reproduce a vintage aesthetic: where some classic microphones favor a warmer, more mid-focused reproduction, it offers a brighter and more airy interpretation of the source.
For lead vocals and detailed acoustic recordings
This microphone is designed for professional studios, sound engineers and producers who want to capture a voice with a strong sense of proximity and plenty of detail. On a sung vocal, it highlights breath nuances and timbre variations. On a rap delivery, its precise reproduction helps preserve intelligibility and articulation.
Its strengths are not limited to vocals. Its fast transient response and 137 dB maximum SPL also make it suitable for recording acoustic instruments or capturing performances in an orchestral context. The choice of polar pattern and placement remains essential for balancing the direct sound and the contribution of the room.
A design built around the capsule, tube and their stability
A large-diaphragm capsule for exploring every nuance
The Sony capsule is the starting point for the C-800G PAC's signature sound. Its open reproduction enhances the perception of high-frequency detail without systematically pursuing the thickness associated with certain tube microphones. This presentation can help a voice find its place in a dense arrangement while preserving the performer's individual characteristics.
The cardioid polar pattern prioritizes the source positioned in front of the microphone and limits the pickup of sounds coming from behind. The omnidirectional mode offers a different perspective, with greater openness to the acoustic environment. It becomes particularly interesting when the room contributes positively to the desired result.
A NOS 6AU6 tube with a detailed character
The NOS 6AU6 tube is selected to complement the capsule's airy character. Its sonic approach favors a linear, detailed reproduction rather than strongly pronounced vintage coloration. The overall design aims for a natural presence and good clarity, particularly in the higher frequencies.
This combination can reduce the need for substantial corrective EQ when the microphone suits the source's timbre. However, it does not replace careful placement or preamp selection: these elements remain crucial for managing brightness, proximity and the balance of the recording.
Cooling designed for extended sessions
The aluminum rear heatsink gives the C-800G its instantly recognizable appearance. This patented thermal system dissipates the heat generated by the tube and helps stabilize its operation. The aim is to maintain a low noise floor and consistent reproduction throughout the recording sessions.
Handcrafted in Japan, the microphone combines a selected tube with custom Sony transformers. It operates with a dedicated external 110 V power supply; a 220 V-to-110 V external transformer is included with this configuration. This power supply is an integral part of the system and must be taken into account when setting up the studio.
