What FM Lab Is For
FM Lab is a virtual synthesizer plug-in designed for creating digital FM sounds, punchy percussive basses, crystalline bells, sharp leads, evolving pads, and experimental textures. Thanks to its dual FM + virtual analog approach, it covers both "classic" sound signatures (inspired by historic FM synths) and modern productions where denser, wider, and more organic timbres are sought.
It is aimed at composers, producers, and sound designers who want a fast tool to sculpt complex timbres, automate precise movements, and integrate FM into styles like electro, pop, techno, synthwave, film scoring, or video games.
Main Features
8-Operator FM Synthesis and Virtual Analog Hybridization
At the heart of FM Lab, sound generation relies on 8 FM operators capable of producing rich harmonics, sharp transients, and expressive modulations. The addition of virtual analog synthesis thickens the sound, reinforces the low end, softens some typical FM harshness, and creates hybrid patches that fit easily into a modern mix.
Algorithm Designer: Custom FM
FM becomes truly creative when you can choose how operators modulate each other. FM Lab includes a freely configurable algorithm designer to build custom structures, from simple architectures (perfect for solid basses and precise plucks) to more complex modulation networks (ideal for moving textures, FX, and harmonized drones).
Algorithm Browser with DX7, TX81Z Models and FM-X Engine
To save time, the algorithm browser offers models inspired by DX7 and TX81Z references, as well as a modern FM-X engine. You immediately get coherent starting points to work on typical sounds (FM EPs, "Lately" basses, bells, marimbas, digital leads) while retaining the freedom to go further with your own routings.
SYX Import: Reuse Your FM Libraries
FM Lab supports SYX file import for DX7 and TX81Z presets. This compatibility eases the transition to a current environment while preserving the sonic DNA of historic patches. It is also an excellent way to learn FM by dissecting famous presets, then modernizing them with modulation, effects, and hybridization.
Multi-Stage Envelopes, Preset Shapes, and Tempo Sync
Animation precision is ensured by fully editable multi-stage envelopes, with 48 preset shapes and tempo synchronization. You can program very fast attacks for percussive sounds, draw long evolutions for cinematic pads, or synchronize rhythmic movements that perfectly follow your project.
Extended Modulation Matrix, Built-in Effects, and Arpeggiator
The extended modulation matrix simplifies setting up expressive routings (envelopes, LFOs, controllers, automation) and encourages "living" sound design. The built-in effects section provides finishing touches directly within the plug-in to widen, dirty, smooth, or energize the timbre. Finally, the powerful arpeggiator allows transforming a patch into an instant musical pattern, useful for quick composing, generating variations, or creating synthetic grooves.
Professional Presets and HALion Integration
FM Lab comes with over 100 presets created by international sound designers, covering classic FM sounds and current hybrid textures. It is also compatible with HALion 7 and HALion Sonic 7, for smooth integration into an instrument- and sound design-oriented production environment.

Questions frequently asked
Can FM Lab import DX7 and TX81Z sounds?
Importing SYX files for DX7 and TX81Z presets is supported. These patches can then be further edited with modulations, effects, and virtual analog hybridization.
How many FM operators are available?
The synthesis uses 8 FM operators and a virtual analog synthesis engine. A configurable algorithm designer allows free definition of their modulation routings.
Is FM Lab compatible with HALion 7?
Compatibility with HALion 7 and HALion Sonic 7 is ensured. More than 100 presets designed by international sound designers are included. The multi-stage envelopes offer 48 predefined shapes with tempo sync.
What Mac and Windows system requirements are needed for FM Lab?
Installation requires Windows 10 64-bit or later, or macOS 11 64-bit or later. A minimum of 12 GB of disk space and an internet connection are required for installation and activation.
Can the license be activated on two computers?
Two simultaneous activations are allowed with a lifetime license, delivered by email and activated online.
