A '90s High Gain Preamp in the AMPWORX Range
The V550 Preamp condenses the DNA of a high-gain amp that became a reference for powerful rock and metal in the '90s, here recreated in pedal format. The goal is clear: to recover the response under the fingers, the attack, compression, and aggressive grain typical of a big stack, without hauling a head and cab. Thanks to TC AMPWORX modeling technology, the V550 naturally fits into a modern pedalboard as a main preamp solution or as a "second amp" ready to be sent DI.
Who the V550 Is For: Stage, Home Studio, and Minimalist Pedalboard
The V550 is ideal if you're looking for a preamp pedal capable of covering a full set: usable cleans, snappy crunch, and massive distortions. The green channel ranges from clean tones to sharp hard rock (perfect for dynamic rhythm parts and clear arpeggios). The red channel pushes much further, with generous gain for heavy rock, classic shred, and modern metal chords.
On stage, you can send it directly to the PA via the DI output with cab simulation, while keeping a dedicated output to feed a monitor, power amp, or another section of your rig. In the home studio, it becomes a simple and effective front-end for quickly recording inspiring takes. And for practice, the headphone output with cab sim lets you keep a true "amp-like" sound at zero volume.
Controls, Modes, and Connectivity: Real Amp Logic in Pedal Format
On the front panel, the V550 offers straightforward ergonomics with GAIN (saturation), LEVEL (volume), and an EQ section LOW / MID / HIGH complemented by RESO to shape the bass foundation and character (useful for tightening palm-muted rhythms or opening the low end depending on the guitar). A master PRESENCE control on the rear allows a "set and forget" adjustment to compensate for a too-bright stage, a dark cab, or a somewhat clinical interface.
The BOOST footswitch activates a 5 dB gain increase. In the Pre position, it pushes the amp model harder and behaves like a classic overdrive, with a mid boost that helps the guitar cut through the mix. In the Post position, it acts more like a volume boost to stand out in solos without adding much gain.
Regarding control, you have two footswitches: BOOST and CHAN. The channel footswitch can operate in channel switching mode or bypass mode depending on the configuration, facilitating integration into very different pedalboards (from minimalist "guitar >V550 >PA" setups to large multi-drive rigs).
The Sound
The V550 aims for a tight and articulate high gain tone, with a clear attack and a pleasant "bounce" feel under the pick. The green channel remains defined and musical when lowering the guitar volume, while the red channel offers dense saturation, ideal for heavy riffs and singing leads. The Celestion 4x12 closed cab sim (G12M Heritage) provides that massive and coherent stage cab vibe, limiting harsh highs and delivering a more "mix-ready" low end in DI and headphone outputs.

Questions frequently asked
Can the TC Electronic V550 be connected directly to a PA system?
The Direct Out output on a balanced 6.35 mm TRS jack includes a Celestion G12M Heritage 4x12 closed cabinet simulation. It allows a DI connection to a sound system with a cabinet sound applied.
What sounds do the two channels offer?
The green channel covers clean tones, crunch, and hard rock ranges. The red channel delivers more gain for heavy riffs, metal chords, and lead parts.
Does the boost affect gain or only volume?
Depending on the selected position, the built-in +5 dB boost works before or after the preamp. In Pre mode, it pushes the amp model with a midrange bump; in Post mode, it mainly increases the output level. The Pre/Post switch is accessible on the top or rear depending on the configuration.
Can the pedal be used with headphones?
A stereo 3.5 mm mini-jack headphone output with cabinet simulation is provided. Headphones with an impedance above 32 ohms are recommended.
What power supply is required for the V550 Preamp?
This pedal requires a 9 V DC, 300 mA power supply with a 5.5 x 2.1 mm center-negative connector. Battery operation is not supported.
