A "VoiceTone Singles" Pedal with a Strong Character

The VoiceTone X1 belongs to TC Helicon's VoiceTone Singles series: compact vocal pedals designed to deliver a strong, immediate effect that's easy to use with your foot. The idea here is not to "hide" the voice but to transform it with bold colors: saturated grain, aggressive megaphone, radio/telephone-style filtering, and amp-like sensations. All of this is based on the series' DNA: a clean and quiet microphone preamp, high-level digital conversion, and a build designed to withstand touring.

Who Is the VoiceTone X1 Ideal For and In What Situations?

The X1 is aimed at singers who want an instant, characterful effect without diving into menus. It's perfect for styles where the voice needs to "cut through" the mix: rock, electro, modern pop, indie, hip-hop, industrial metal, as well as for occasional vocal parts (breaks, spoken verses, bridges, gimmicks). Live, it's an excellent tool to create dynamics in a set (very clear on/off effect); in the studio, it allows you to quickly capture a lo-fi, radio, or saturated texture without going through a chain of plug-ins.

The X1 also suits performers who move around a lot: paired with the compatible MP-75 microphone (optional), the Mic Control function lets you activate or mute the effect directly from the mic, handy when you don't want to "search" for the pedal on the floor between phrases.

Controls, Modes, and Handling: Everything at Your Fingertips

The concept is deliberately straightforward: you select a style (megaphone/telephone, distortion, amp simulation), then refine the sound with two musical controls. The Drive adjusts the saturation intensity, ranging from a slight vocal crunch to a more pronounced distortion. The Filter narrows the bandwidth to achieve more "telephone"-like, nasal, sharper textures, or conversely, to retain more body. A Mic Gain control adapts the pedal to your microphone and vocal level, with an input level LED to avoid clipping.

For integration, the VoiceTone X1 offers stage-oriented XLR connectivity: XLR microphone input, XLR output to a mixing console or powered speaker, and the ability to chain multiple VoiceTone Singles pedals to build a coherent vocal effects chain. A USB port allows firmware updates and maintenance (not required for live use).

Sound Character

The VoiceTone X1 stands out with a deliberately dirty, edgy, and modern signature: controllable vocal distortion, grittier attacks, and megaphone-type textures that make the voice sound like it's passing through a small saturated speaker. The "telephone" filtering effects add a radio/lo-fi vibe that's very effective for creating contrast in an arrangement, especially when alternating tight verses and open choruses. The pedal remains responsive to playing and dynamics: lowering the intensity (Drive) preserves more intelligibility, while pushing the control yields a more aggressive and spectacular sound.

In practice, the X1 is found in performance-oriented setups, notably on pedalboards used by Tim Vanhamel, where megaphone and saturated textures help the voice stand out over a dense band.
