A "reference" mic revisited in the Custom Shop spirit

The UA Bock 187 follows the tradition of large-diaphragm studio microphones, prized for their definition and ability to "place" a voice at the forefront of the mix. Universal Audio entrusts the modernization of this iconic sound to David Bock, known for studying, repairing, and optimizing reference microphones for years. The result: a boutique, hand-assembled mic that retains the classic DNA while addressing common limitations found in vintage models.

For which voices and instruments is the UA Bock 187 made?

The UA Bock 187 is a central choice for a recording or production studio seeking a versatile main microphone: pop/rock vocals, rap, voice-over, acoustic guitars, soft overheads, brass, or amps captured with control. Its cardioid pattern facilitates source isolation and limits room bleed while maintaining a solid image. It is also well suited for demanding home studios looking for a "signature" mic capable of handling intimate takes to more powerful sources without harshness.

Modern features for a rounder, more robust sound

Unlike some vintage mics that can become harsh when pushed, the Bock 187 relies on a revised architecture: a more generous Cinemag output transformer and optimized FET circuitry. This provides greater stability, perceived dynamics, and thickness in the low end without losing the essential presence to cut through a mix.

FAT Mode: weight in the lows without external EQ

The FAT mode is a simple and effective tool to thicken a vocal or add body to an instrument take: it boosts frequencies between 10 Hz and 400 Hz. Combined with the high-pass filter, it allows immediate adaptation of the mic to the source, distance, and room acoustics.

Pad and high-pass filter: control strong sources and proximity effect

With the -10 dB pad, you protect the preamp input stage and maintain a clean capture on more intense sources. The 120 Hz high-pass filter helps contain plosives, foot noises, and excessive bass related to the proximity effect while preserving natural intelligibility.
