A Deliberate Evolution: The Royal Flush+ Following the Royal Flush

The Royal Flush+ is the upgraded version of the Royal Flush, VS Audio's flagship model. The idea is not to start from scratch but to preserve the overall character that made the original successful while bringing targeted improvements: more fidelity, more dynamics, and above all more options to sculpt the tone. This "next generation" approach positions the Royal Flush+ as a versatile overdrive platform, designed to fit into modern pedalboards where players seek both a signature sound and great adaptability.

For Whom, Which Styles, and In What Contexts?

The VS Audio Royal Flush+ is aimed at guitarists who want an expressive overdrive pedal capable of following playing nuances and guitar volume variations. It suits both intermediate musicians looking to step up in tone quality and advanced players seeking a "always musical" drive for studio and stage.

Stylistically, it excels in blues (warm and thick overdrive), rock (tight rhythms, controlled mids), pop (clean and defined drive), and in heavier genres when used as a lead boost or stacked with another distortion. Live, the dual-channel logic and effects loop facilitate setting up a coherent pedalboard; in the studio, its dynamics and saturation options help precisely place the texture in the mix.

Controls, Gain Options, and Effects Loop: A Pedal Designed for the Field

The Royal Flush+ features a two-channel architecture, each with three essential controls: Volume, Gain, and Tone. This setup allows preparing two complementary drive levels: for example, one channel set for light overdrive for rhythm, and the other more driven for lead parts or solos.

The major new usability feature is the "Edge" selectors on each channel. The goal is to add additional overdrive tonalities and vary the saturation behavior: you can switch from a rounder, denser drive to a more incisive texture with increased presence and bite to stand out in a mix, especially on humbuckers or amps already rich in low mids.

Another highlight is the passive effects loop. It offers real integration comfort with other effects, particularly if you like organizing the processing order (for example placing modulation, EQ, or delay at a precise point in the chain). It also opens configuration possibilities where each channel can be exploited independently to optimize flexibility depending on the rest of the pedalboard.

Finally, the pedal includes a high-performance, low-noise JFET audio operational amplifier and accepts a power supply up to 18V DC. In practice, this translates to a broader feel under the fingers, better transient response, and more stable reaction when playing hard, rolling back the guitar volume, or stacking multiple gain stages.

The Sound

The VS Audio Royal Flush+ aims for a rich, dynamic, and versatile overdrive. At low gain, it can serve as a "sweetener": it thickens, adds dimension, and provides a slight natural compression that makes chords more coherent without squashing them. Increasing the gain yields a stronger drive with a more pronounced grain and enhanced presence, particularly useful for lead lines.

The "Edge" selectors allow varying the perception of attack and bite: depending on the setting, the pedal can be smoother and creamier or sharper for tight rhythms and solos that "speak" immediately. The Tone control per channel helps adapt the Royal Flush+ to different amps (bright combos, darker heads) and various guitars (snappy single coils or denser humbuckers), while maintaining an organic and responsive feel.
