A New Chapter in the Storybook Stereo Universe
The Fable MK II joins Walrus Audio's " Storybook Stereo " series alongside the Lore MK II. It builds on the original Fable's core idea: transforming the guitar signal into living sound through the combination of delay and granular processing. This new version takes the concept further with a true stereo architecture, full MIDI integration, and expanded preset storage capabilities.
Granular processing breaks the signal into very short sound fragments, known as grains, then plays them back at different speeds, directions, and positions. The Fable MK II harnesses this complex technique across five musical and immediately usable modes. Rather than simply repeating your playing, it deconstructs it, slows it down, reverses it, and evolves it with each repetition.
For Guitarists Who Want to Make Their Pedalboard Breathe
The Walrus Audio Fable MK II is designed for guitarists, bassists, and sound creators looking for much more than a conventional delay. It is particularly well suited to ambient, post-rock, shoegaze, experimental music, drone, indie, film music, and modern worship. It can also become a powerful source of inspiration for enriching a minimalist riff or introducing a spectacular transition into a song.
Its interface remains accessible to musicians already familiar with effect pedals, while its programming depth will satisfy fans of sophisticated MIDI setups. In the studio, it can generate pads and textures that are difficult to reproduce by other means. On stage, presets, tap tempo, and the expression pedal let you recall or evolve atmospheres without interrupting your playing.
Five Granular-Delay Modes for Creating Sonic Landscapes
Each mode combines two processors placed in series, then routes them through two separate feedback loops. The Feedback and Regen controls therefore independently manage the quantity of repetitions from each stage, giving the Fable MK II its organic and unpredictable behavior.
Mode I combines a reverse delay with a reverse granular processor for backward cascades that can be smooth or choppy depending on the grain size. Mode II combines a classic delay with an upper-octave granular processor, ideal for bright, airy trails. Mode III pairs a dark, warm, analog-voiced delay with a lower-octave granular processor for deep and massive textures.
Mode IV, named " Grain-Verb ", stacks two multi-tap granular processors to create an unstable, dense, and highly detailed reverb. Finally, Mode V places a random-pitch granular processor behind a standard delay: each grain can rise, fall, move forward, or play backward, producing constantly evolving movement.
The Tweak knob provides access to five additional parameters. It lets you adjust the stereo width, modulation speed and shape, the pitch shift of the Dive/Rise mode, and its transition time. The Tap footswitch provides tap tempo, but also triggers the momentary Dive/Rise effect: hold it down to make the playback frequency drop or rise, with an instant or gradual transition depending on the Ramp setting.
The Sound
The Fable MK II is not designed to provide the transparency of a subtle delay: it transforms the signal into expressive, textured, and constantly moving sound. Its repetitions can remain silky and enveloping, become bright and crystalline in the upper registers, or take on a dark depth in the descending modes. Stereo dramatically expands the sound image, giving a mono guitar an immersive sense of space.
The two feedback loops allow the effect to respond to your playing rather than simply repeat a phrase. With moderate settings, the pedal surrounds your notes with a living halo. Push Feedback and Regen further, and it produces granular clouds, reverse pads, and controllable sonic accidents. The spirit of the original Fable has already found its place on the pedalboards of artists drawn to texture, including Dylan Carlson, guitarist for the band Earth.
