A Yamaha "Next Generation" Between Portable Piano and Arranger Keyboard

With the P-S500, Yamaha evolves the concept of the portable digital piano by integrating a connected approach firmly focused on progress. Within the range, it stands out with its dual identity: on one hand, a true piano playing experience designed for serious practice; on the other, an arranger dimension (styles, accompaniments, microphone) that encourages playing complete pieces and performing with a rich sound, even solo.

Keyboard Design

The Yamaha P-S500 features an 88-key Graded Hammer Standard (GHS) keyboard, with heavier resistance in the bass and lighter in the treble, replicating the mechanical logic of an acoustic piano. This weighted touch facilitates dynamic control, from soft pianos to sharp attacks, while remaining comfortable for daily practice. Velocity sensitivity accurately reflects your playing intentions, and the " Stream Lights " system (red and blue light guidance) visually indicates the notes to play above the keys to assist with reading, memorization, and rhythmic placement.

Sound Quality

The sound section highlights two grand piano references: the Yamaha CFX and the Bösendorfer Imperial, allowing you to switch from a bright and precise character to a deeper and more enveloping tone depending on your repertoire. The Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM) technology adds depth by reproducing resonance behavior (interaction of strings and instrument body), enhancing the "piano" feel in phrasing. For headphone playing, the binaural sampling improves spatialization and provides a more natural listening experience, as if the sound comes from the instrument rather than being "stuck" to the ears. Beyond piano sounds, the P-S500 offers 660 voices (including Super Articulation voices) and relies on an integrated stereo amplification system suitable for practice and small performances, with extended polyphony to play dense passages without note cutoff.

Built-in Effects

  • Reverbs and ambiences (various room types) to place the piano and sounds in a believable space
  • Brightness adjustment to tailor sparkle and presence in a mix or reverberant room
  • Piano-specific processing: VRM and binaural rendering for a more organic sensation, especially on headphones
  • Effects on microphone input with vocal harmonizer to enrich the voice and increase impact during performance
