The Yamaha Silent Guitar: a reference for practice and stage

With the Silent Guitar series, Yamaha created a credible alternative to the traditional classical guitar for musicians who want to keep their familiar feel while gaining discretion and practicality. The SLG200N (nylon version) features the iconic detachable frame design combined with a sturdy mahogany construction, complemented by a rosewood and maple frame. The whole is designed to offer a stable grip, great consistency, and reliable response both plugged in and through headphones.

Which musician and styles is this guitar designed for?

The Yamaha SLG200N suits beginners seeking immediate playability and a reassuring instrument for progress, as well as intermediate and professional players needing a silent practice solution, a travel instrument, or a stage-ready guitar. Its 650 mm scale length and 52 mm nut width preserve the feel of a classical guitar, making it particularly comfortable for classical, fingerstyle, bossa, modern flamenco, or pop, with a very appreciated "plug and play" aspect in amplified contexts.

Sound

The SLG200N relies on a piezo pickup under the nut, driven by the SRT Powered preamp. The goal: to achieve a more organic feel than a piezo alone, thanks to a studio mic simulation that can be finely blended via the "SRT Blend" knob. The Bass and Treble controls allow tonal balance adjustment depending on the amp, PA system, or interface, while the built-in effects (Reverb 1, Reverb 2, Chorus) add depth and cohesion. The combination of mahogany (body and neck) and ebony fingerboard promotes precise attack, good definition, and appreciated stability, especially for consistent headphone playing.

Recommended Compatible Accessories

To fully exploit the SLG200N, plan for a 6.35 mm jack cable for the Line Out to amp or interface, as well as a 3.5 mm stereo mini-jack headset for discreet playing via the Phones output. Regarding strings, a medium tension nylon set in the classic format (650 mm scale) is perfectly suited.
