A "Subkick" Approach That Has Become a Studio Classic

This dynamic microphone adopts a philosophy well known to sound engineers: replacing the traditional capsule with a speaker-type transducer to emphasize low-frequency energy. In a modern mix, this approach is particularly appreciated for restoring weight to the low end without having to over-EQ a mic placed inside the kick drum. With its 10-inch birch plywood shell and AV10-MLF speaker, this model continues the "subkick" solutions used for kick drum, low tom, or even bass amp miking, where the primary goal is to capture the sensation of weight and pressure.

Who Is It For and When to Use It?

This microphone is aimed at drummers, home studio musicians, and studios seeking a broader and more controlled kick drum capture in the low-frequency range. Thanks to its deliberately narrow frequency response (50 to 2000 Hz), it focuses on the essentials: the body, roundness, and foundation of the kick, without interfering with the attack, which is generally better captured by a second microphone.

In practice, it is often used as a complement: you keep an "inside" mic or one close to the batter head for click and definition, then add this model in front of the resonant head to reinforce the low end. It can also find its place on a bass cabinet (supporting a broader-band mic), or on sources lacking depth (floor tom, low percussion, certain synth takes through an amp), whenever the goal is to obtain a more present and organic low end.
